Critic Reviews

Review: Arturia AstroLab — AudioTechnology

audiotechnology.com

Arturia's AstroLab is an avant-garde stage keyboard that shines with its 1300+ sounds and deep integration into Analog Lab, making it a compelling choice for dedicated users of Arturia's ecosystem. However, its unique UI and reliance on the AstroLab Connect app may frustrate those seeking a more straightforward experience. While it boasts impressive aesthetics and performance capabilities, the complexity of its operation can deter newcomers. It's a specialized tool that may not cater to everyone, but for committed Arturia fans, it could be a game changer.

Arturia AstroLab

soundonsound.com

Arturia's AstroLab is a promising stage keyboard that brings together a myriad of classic synth sounds in a compact design. While its sound quality is commendable and it boasts an impressive library, practical design choices, such as the awkward placement of pitch-bend wheels and knobs, detract from its usability during performances. The semi-weighted keys may not satisfy all players, especially pianists, and the current firmware issues raise concerns about reliability. Overall, AstroLab is a noteworthy attempt but requires further refinement to fully meet the needs of live musicians.

Arturia AstroLab review • magazin Mehatronika

magazinmehatronika.com

Arturia's AstroLab shines as a performance powerhouse with its sleek design and outstanding sound quality. Musicians will appreciate its seamless integration with Arturia's software ecosystem and impressive connectivity options. However, the keyboard's design compromises playability for portability, and the simplistic control scheme may deter those seeking deep sound design capabilities. Despite these shortcomings, the AstroLab stands out as a robust option for gigging musicians, marrying form and function effectively. It's a captivating blend of hardware and software, though not without its quirks.

Arturia AstroLab Review: World-Class Synths in a Keyboard | WIRED

wired.com

Arturia's AstroLab delivers a stellar blend of classic synth emulations and modern performance features, making it a strong contender for live musicians. With 33 instruments and an impressive keybed, it promises versatility, though its 61-key limitation and fewer hands-on controls may deter some. The sound quality shines — particularly with iconic instruments — but the acoustic pianos leave a bit to be desired. Priced at $1,999, it strikes a balance against competitors, offering great value for those seeking a high-end stage keyboard without the excess. If you can overlook some minor quirks, the AstroLab is a fantastic addition to any music setup.

Review: Arturia AstroLab, the stage keyboard with Arturia instruments - CDM Create Digital Music

cdm.link

Arturia's AstroLab is a unique stage keyboard that successfully integrates software and hardware, offering over 1300 presets and a user-friendly interface. Its sturdy build and portable design cater well to live performers. The Navigation Wheel, initially met with skepticism, proves intuitive for browsing settings. However, it falls short for those seeking deep sound editing, as detailed modifications require a separate software license. Additionally, the limited polyphony and noticeable lag when switching presets may frustrate some users. Overall, AstroLab is a compelling choice for keyboardists looking to bring Arturia's renowned sounds on stage at a competitive price, but it may not satisfy every musician's needs.

Arturia Astrolab review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

AstroLab’s charm lies in its user-friendly design, making it a solid choice for gigging musicians who value simplicity over extensive sound design. While it offers a wide range of sounds and seamless integration with analog and digital tools, it falls short in depth, particularly with its basic looper and limitations on some V Collection sounds. The 61-key setup may also deter some players looking for more options. In short, it excels in performance settings but might leave studio-focused users wanting more.

In this video from Arturia with DāM-FunK, he says of the AstroLab:

Instruments are very inspirational to my sound. I've been working with some of the same instruments since I was a teen. But when I do hear a new keyboard or a new sound that has some special things in there, it just automatically just makes me "wow." Like a like a a twinkle comes in my head, the AstroLab does that. It's fantastic.

So I would describe AstroLab as this fantastic keyboard that it doesn't seem like it's so complicated to use and I'm not one that likes complicated keyboards or synthesizers. So it's user-friendly but it's not keyboards for dummies, if you will. So it's a cross between easy to work with, but you're happy to work with it.

What makes Arturia instruments special to me is the fact it seems like a lot of love and care got put into the sounds and even the visual aspect of it. When I'm looking through sounds, it's talking to me. It's making it easy for me. I don't find myself battling with the keyboard to get music out of it. It feels like it's actually coming to me, as opposed to me dragging the sound out of the keyboard. So that's something new to me because when it comes to dealing with analog equipment all the time, you're doing a lot to try to like get a certain sound. AstroLab really helps me get into a zone where I'm actually able to express myself with the music that I have in my head.
