The king of portable amps
There's no point in recommending expensive branded amps to a beginner who won't have enough experience or perspective to choose their sound—and they might simply give up on guitar altogether.
After some research and listening, the Boss Katana Mini seemed like the perfect choice due to its size and, most importantly, its ability to run on batteries, allowing you to enjoy playing in the sun at the back of the garden. Once the player is ready to choose a more powerful amp for playing in a band, with a tone they've carefully selected, this amp will still be useful for its practicality and sound quality.
Because yes, when discovering this little portable amp, the sound is surprisingly good. I quickly thought about getting one for myself as well. The tone is clean, pleasant, but compressed—so be careful! It might not suit everyone, depending on your experience and musical style. However, it helps smooth out playing imperfections, which can be a real struggle for beginners—making it a solid advantage in this situation. The power is sufficient for playing alone, and for rock and metal, it's just perfect!
The three modes—clean, crunch, and distortion—are excellent, and the EQ is quite responsive. The built-in delay is great, and you can even get a reverb effect by setting the time to zero. It’s far from the soulless modeling of some competing brands.
The build quality is rock solid—if it falls, you won't be picking up pieces; you'd probably need a hammer to break it! The design is stylish and well-finished.
I own a Blackstar HT-5R as a practice amp, and this Boss Katana Mini holds its own! Of course, these two amps are in different leagues, but that just goes to show how impressive the Katana Mini is for its size.
Great value for money—I highly recommend it!

Good in theory, but not rugged enough
This amp fits the small portable amp niche well however, for being designed to be mobile and traveled with, the construction could use a re-design. Not rugged enough and the sound quality has noticeably diminished over the 2 or so years I had it. Overdrive and Brown FX settings sound just like the clean setting, although out of the box, they sounded so crisp.

Best battery powered amp I've even seen
Absolutely fantastic battery powered amp, great tone at bedroom volume. Takes pedals pretty well on all 3 gain stages but any ground noise from your instrument can become unbearable. Cab simulated aux out is fantastic. My only down side to it is there's no inbuilt reverb, only delay, but other than that it's perfect

Like it almost as good as my former Roland Cube.
This is a cool little portable battery powered amp that I usually take camping with me. It replaces my Roland Cube which was also portable and battery powered. The Boss Katana Mini will do clean to high gain and has a built in delay. Why delay? No idea, I'd have preferred reverb but the delay sounds fine. The Katana Mini sounds far bigger then it looks (or feels). One day I need to take it to church and mic it up to see how it sounds on the board, have yet to try that.

Quiet time practice amp
If beautiful dreamy tones are what you're looking for then this ain't the amp. But it's a cracking little quiet time (can get pretty loud for 7w) practice amp with 3 gain settings from clean, crunch to brown. I use mine mainly for playing backing tracks through from my tablet whilst using my main amp for my guitar. Nice and light, travel anywhere type of amp that can run on batteries if required. It would have got 5 stars if they'd put reverb on it.

Good tone!
It is really solid practice tone. Little lacks brightness but actually can fight bigger solid state amps. Does not fizz at all. Clean can be set to little dirty so I love it with pedals. Also ok with looper in the front.
Using on PSU requires grounding. Boss says it is optional but in my opinion is that crackling noise will drive you nuts. There is dedicated place to connect it. You can connect line in with an grounded device turned off and will also work.

Best combo amp for home
Small, cheap, loud, portable, cab-sim, distortion. But why delay? I don't need one. Maybe some reverb, but better no digital effects at all for lower price.

Handy portable practice amp
Surprisingly good sound for a small unit and with some great fx options built in. Great for practice at home or when travelling when something larger isn't practical. Very reasonable cost as well.
