Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Roland Micro Cube GX.

User experience

  • Owners have used the Micro Cube GX for over a decade, noting its durability even under heavy use, such as playing with drums or with a torn speaker.

    Source
  • Owners find most effects on the Micro Cube GX, except reverb, almost unusable, requiring significant tweaking for decent tones.

    Source
  • Despite advancing technology, many return to the Micro Cube GX for its nostalgic and balanced sound, suggesting its lasting appeal and character.

    Source
  • Owners report that the "Extreme" setting can result in a muddy sound, especially for thrash and death metal genres, requiring additional pedal use for clarity.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Users express disappointment with the Micro Cube GX's distortion quality given its price, expecting better from a Roland/Boss product.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The Micro Cube GX struggles to compete in sound quality with models like the Yamaha THR10 or ID: TVP.

    Source
  • The reverb/delay effect on the Micro Cube GX can inadvertently boost treble and cut mids, especially noticeable when not using gain channels.

    Source
  • An aux input allows users to play along with tracks without degrading the audio quality, which is a unique advantage over some other mini amps.

    Source
  • The Roland Micro Cube GX lacks a three-band EQ, which limits tonal customization, particularly for achieving clear metal tones.

    Source
  • The Micro Cube GX can run on AA batteries with up to 20 hours of battery life, making it highly portable and convenient for outdoor use.

    Source
  • The amp's tone control is criticized for reducing treble and gain, leading to a muddier sound when adjusted.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The Boss Katana Mini offers bass/mids/treble controls and is around $100 new, making it an alternative for those valuing EQ over effects.

    Source
  • The Yamaha THR series is recommended as an alternative for better sound quality in a similar portable form factor.

    Source
  • Some users suggest the Peavey Vypyr for better metal distortions and a wider range of effects compared to the Micro Cube GX.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • This amp works well as a studio monitor substitute for checking mixes; if music sounds muddy on it, adjustments are likely needed.

    Source
  • Ideal for headphone practice, but less effective for loud, live band settings due to limited power output.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Using a distortion pedal with the Micro Cube GX can improve metal tones, but requires extensive tweaking to achieve a satisfactory sound.

Best Test Amp

With the verity of different effects and amp sims makes it one of the best platforms I have used to test out different kinds of sounds before committing to a higher budget version. Plus the "memory" button allows you combine the verity of effects leading to lots of fun of experimentation in my experience. I may never replace this amp in my rig and instead hook it (up through the head phone jack in the back) to a lager cabinet.

10/10

I use this amp for busking as it is incredibly light and has so many effects to choose from , it is incredibly loud if you want it to be and it is relatively cheap

Preferred Settings + Usage:

clean - JC clean , gain 7, volume 7, tone 6 metal - r fier stack , gain 10 , volume 3, tone 5 rock - brit combo , gain 8, volume 6, tone 6

Awesome sound for a practice amp

The built-in effects are of very good quality, e.g. the built-in flanger is way better than TC Vortex flanger. Th reverb is another thing where this amp shines. The amp models are really good too, with Mesa-Boogie/Rectifier being the best. The only downside for me is the very basic tuner. OK, you can tune up to standard EADGBE, but what about drop tunings? NO FX Loop too, but I am not crazy about it.

Awesome little unit

Tons of power in a tiny package. Several different amp profiles, onboard fx, and cordless. Onboard fx can be utilized with larger speakers by using the 1/8" output to a 1/4" adapter. This only works if connected to a powered speaker. Very cool little product. I actually had to get rid of this for another piece of gear, however definitely worth noting.

Great practice and recording amp!

This and the previous model Micro Cube sound incredible for the size and price. It's a shame they've been discontinued.

victor_ang_kai_quan

Portability at its finest.

This amp like its other big brothers have amazing sounds. Do not let the size fool you, there are up to 15 effects in this small practice amp. As a member of a band we will have to bring our equipment to school to practice and this fulfills the portability I was looking for. Also it can run on an adapter or 6 AA Batteries. It is loud enough for a small jam and practice with bands or friends and it also work for microphones. It has a aux input so practicing to backing tracks would be very easy. Overall, amazing amp, have an amazing sound and is bloody portable.

Incredible Amp

This amp has loads of different effects and sound. It can be powered by either batteries or a power lead. This makes it especially convenient for the likes of buskers. I would highly recommend it for anyone looking for a small amp.

Best Practice Amp on Market

The GX is just brilliant. it can either run from a standard 9v power supply or off AA batteries making it perfect for travel or busking. It has a range of built in amp models (including an acoustic simulator and a "mic" mode) and a load of effects such as Chorus, Flanger, Phaser, Heavy Octave, and Reverb (also emulated spring reverb). It also has an aux-in and a headphone-out meaning it can be used to jam along to tracks easily. All in all this is by far the best affordable/travel/practice amp I've come across

etrocks

Okay small amplifier

Twitter, November 6, 2020

Vol. 7 consists only of recordings made in Niger. These recordings showcase more of the songwriting process as we experiment with new ideas at weddings and as we sip tea for hours, blasting guitars through tiny Roland cube amps.

Guitar World, May 18, 2021, "Mdou Moctar: 'I really like the Stratocaster sound. Whatever tone I need, I can have it in that guitar'"

Circa-2019, he would use a pair of Roland Jazz Chorus 120 combos, with a pedalboard populated by a Boss OD-3, the Hoof fuzz and Bellows overdrive from EarthQuaker Devices, plus an Electro-Harmonix Bad Stone and a Boss DD-6 delay that would be run in stereo.

Pedals remain a new frontier, with phaser, chorus and delay all favorites. Moctar will return from tour with different items of gear, but at home digital modeling amps such as the Fender Mustang and Roland Cube offer all-in-one solutions for processed guitar tones.
