Description

The CA-286 preamp module is a tribute to the classic 1950’s and 60’s European two-stage amplifier made popular by Telefunken™, Langevin™, Collins™, and Gates™. The CA-286 excels in high fidelity recording applications providing the rich, detailed midrange often associated with vintage EF86 tube based preamps.

The CA-286 PS6 preamp module uses our own Coil Audio transformers, high quality capacitors, resistors, and NOS octal tubes and is powered by our PS6 Rack Tray and Power Supply.

Coil Audio: CA-286 mic preamp | Tape Op Magazine | Longform candid interviews with music producers and audio engineers covering mixing, mastering, recording and music production.

tapeop.com

The Coil Audio CA-286 mic preamp fuses vintage aesthetics with modern functionality, showcasing impeccable build quality and sonic excellence. Its modular design and high-quality components, including NOS Valvo EF86 tubes and USA-wound transformers, promise durability and sound fidelity. However, the extensive tweakability of its controls may overwhelm less experienced users, leading to potential confusion during use. While it offers creative potential for those willing to invest time, the complexity may detract from a straightforward recording experience. Ultimately, this preamp's strengths in construction and sound make it a worthwhile investment for discerning engineers, but be prepared for a learning curve.

Coil Audio CA-286 Preamp

mixonline.com

The Coil Audio CA-286 is a game-changing tube preamp that delivers rich, full-bodied tones across diverse applications, particularly shining with electric guitars, bass, and drums. Its robust construction and thoughtful design features, such as swappable transformers, elevate its usability. However, while it excels sonically, the effects of the Hi and Low knobs disappointingly lack significant impact, leaving some users wanting more control over their sound shaping. Overall, it’s a fantastic investment for musicians seeking a timeless piece of gear, though you might need to pair it with an external phantom power supply for optimal performance with certain mics.
