Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Colorsound Jumbo Tonebender.

Features and functionality

  • This pedal uses an opamp + clipper circuit, likely a 741 opamp, suggesting similarities to a Distortion+ rather than a traditional Tonebender.

    Source
  • The Walrus Audio Jupiter offers a wide sweep in fuzz and tone, a three-way toggle for different clippings, and a bass boost toggle, making it versatile for various music styles.

    Source

Comparisons

    Source
  • The Colorsound Jumbo Tonebender is based on the V3 Big Muff, suggesting a potential interest in Muff variants like the Wren and Cuff Tall Font Russian for similar fuzz tones.

    Source

User experience

  • Despite lacking germanium components, it exhibits low input impedance, affecting signal chain placement similar to germanium fuzzes.

    Source
  • The Wampler Leviathan Fuzz stands out for its germanium and silicon modes, offering a wide range of gain settings and useful EQ adjustments despite less impressive demos online.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Owners note it loses sound quality when paired with buffered pedals before it, a trait common in vintage-style fuzz circuits.

    Source
  • The MXR Blue Box provides an octave fuzz ideal for solo tones, but can become glitchy, which some users find satisfying for specific musical textures.

Tone Machines Blog: Colorsound Jumbo Tone Bender (1980)

tonemachinesblog.com

The Colorsound Jumbo Tone Bender is a beastly fuzz pedal that delivers massive bass response and chunky fuzz tones perfect for Stoner Rock and Sabbath riffs. While it lacks the smooth "Woman tones" of a Big Muff, it compensates with a unique, zippy sound that stands out. The pedal's ability to blend clean signal adds a desirable roundness to the low end, making it great for bass guitar as well. Despite its limitations in achieving certain smooth tones, the Jumbo Tone Bender is lauded for its deep, organic fuzz, making it a cherished piece in any guitarist's arsenal.

jumbo, supa, muffin, whatever

the jumbo and supa are pretty similar... both are like a big muff with only 1 pair of back to back clipping diodes.... or like silicon transistor mkIII benders with a pair of clipping diodes added... however you wanna look at it. These are valuable and not worth keeping when they are very easy to clone with any old parts…. or get a current production big muff and clip the first pair of diodes out, boom, instant jumbo. 99% there with no other mods needed.
