My favorite Dimarzio, but still swapped it out

This is the stock neck pickup from my Ibanez Xiphos, and while it's plenty good enough to get through a gig, I've never found a Dimarzio pickup that had the "mojo" (at least not for me). They're definitely pro-quality, but to me, they always sound... Sterile. Bland. Polite. I'm not sure how to put it without making the countless Dimarzio fans out there angry, but they just don't sound inspiring to me.

The Air Norton S is the single-coil-sized version of the Air Norton humbucker, and it sounds almost identical to the full-sized model. Like many Dimarzios, it's not intended specifically for the bridge, neck, or middle positions, but this one is popular in the neck slot. I would consider it a "vintage" style pickup in terms of output, but the voicing is definitely more modern. Fairly balanced bass and midrange with a slightly reduced treble, but to me the midrange sounds very prominent. Not bad for neck-position soloing, but it has a "nasty" (their words, not mine) character that reduces the "sweetness" that I like in a neck pickup.

All in all, it's NOT "bad" - it's actually my favorite Dimarzio pickup. But when it came time to upgrade the bridge pickup in the Xiphos, I knew I wanted a neck pickup that was better for me, too. I replaced it with a Seymour Duncan Little '59, and I'm happy I did. But this one might make an appearance in another guitar someday, if I can find one that would make better use of it.
