Description

Unleash your guitar's true potential with the DiMarzio D Activator Set, where innovation meets unmatched performance. Crafted for guitarists who crave the robust, articulate sound of active pickups without their typical downsides, this set offers the perfect balance of power and precision. The D Activator Set captures the essence of active humbuckers — delivering powerful, clean, and open tones with exceptional harmonic overtones and tight lows — all while maintaining the dynamic range and warmth that passive pickups are known for.

Say goodbye to the hassle of batteries! This set is entirely passive, providing a natural response to your playing dynamics. Whether you're shredding with a hard pick attack or gently caressing the strings, these pickups react instantly, preserving the clarity and punch of every note. Designed for versatility, they ensure that your sound remains dynamic and expressive, even at the highest gain settings.

Perfectly suited for both neck and bridge positions, the D Activator Set is all about giving players the control they need to shape their sound effortlessly. It pairs seamlessly with standard controls, recommending a 500K value for optimal performance, but they also shine with 1Megohm tone controls for those extended cable runs. Experience the clarity, power, and response that can only come from DiMarzio's innovation.

Key Features:

  • Passive humbucker design with active-like qualities
  • Powerful, clean, and open tones with rich harmonic overtones
  • Instant response to hard or light pick attack
  • No battery requirement
  • Recommended for 500K controls; 1Megohm for optimal performance with long cables
  • Suitable for both bridge and neck positions

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about DiMarzio D Activator Set.

Features and functionality

  • D-Activators offer a transparent sound with a slightly scooped EQ, enhancing high frequencies for clarity on low strings and excellent coil splitting for clean tones.

    Source
  • The Invader uses three ceramic magnets and oversized hex screws, influencing its tonal characteristics and output.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • D-Activators are versatile, performing well with various effects and suitable for genres requiring clean tones and high clarity, such as funk.

    Source
  • D-Activators perform well with a gain setting below 2-3 on the amp for clearer tone, avoiding harshness in recordings.

    Source
  • The Invader's "foghorn" midrange quality is emphasized when used with a 500k pot and tone disconnected.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Black Winters have a flat EQ and high output requiring careful handling of lows; ideal for distinct midrange tones and tight palm mutes.

    Source
  • For a direct sound comparison, D-Activators are used on an 8-string except in one track where Black Winters are on a 7-string, highlighting tonal differences.

    Source
  • Owners find X2N pickups too hot for recordings compared to D-Activators, even with input gain settings near zero on audio interfaces.

    Source
  • DiMarzio D Activator is likened to the SD Nazgûl for clarity but reportedly cuts better through the mix.

    Source

User experience

  • Despite concerns of sounding thin, proper signal chain and bass adjustment can mitigate this issue with D-Activators on 8-strings.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • D-Activators require aggressive low pass filtering when recording due to their high output; cutting below 100Hz and above 8kHz is recommended.

    Source
  • Lowering the Invader pickup height can clear up muddiness, especially with modern high-gain amps.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • First-gen Scarlett 2i2 users report clipping issues with hot pickups like the X2N, while the second-gen handles them better.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Invader pickups can be modified by swapping oversized hex screws for slugs to reduce muddiness.

Heavy, sweet and clear

I wanted to build a guitar for MDM in C-standard. So I swapped emg 81 85 to fishman fluence. But I wasn't pleased with the sound and again I've started searching for new (but at this time passive) pickups. After a week of searching I've ordered this pickups set and with a happy smile on my face started soldering them in. That was IT. The sound I've just imagined in my head. Not a fan of ceramic magnets. But in this pickups if you don't know about ceramic you wouldn't even think they are. Pretty neutral EQ. Warm high-end and very-very clear sound even with a tons of gain. If you are looking to something AlNiCo-5-ish high output pickup - you can try D Activator.

Remember, this is totally subjective

Preferred Settings + Usage:

Peavey 6505 or EVH 5150 with ts/808 (zero drive - full volume) infront and Greenbacks 25 speakers - and I am flying in clouds.

Better than EMGs

I have them on my B.C. Rich Beast NT guitar and this set of pickup did wonders for that guitar. The guitar used to sound muddy and mushy with the stock pickups but with these pickups it sounds excellent. They are more articulate than EMGs or any other active pickups but at the same time they have output like EMGs.
