Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about DW Collector Series Custom Drum Set.

Features and functionality

  • A birch shell kit naturally offers shorter sustain and less resonance compared to maple, providing a crisper sound with more projection.

    Source
  • Users recommend reconsidering the necessity of heavy rack hardware for smaller setups, suggesting lighter single-braced Yamaha cymbal stands as a more cost-effective alternative.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Birch kits, like the British Drum Co's Scandinavian Birch, are praised for incredible attack and low end, rivaling DW Collector maple kits.

    Source
  • DW's current non-Keller shells are perceived as superior by some to the older Keller shell models previously used.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners emphasize the versatility of maple for sound experimentation, noting it requires more effort to achieve desired tones compared to birch.

    Source
  • Some drummers prefer bass drums no wider than 16" for their play style, finding 18" depths less desirable.

    Source
  • Owners often regret selling high-end kits like the DW Collector's, citing emotional attachment and difficulty in replacing them with similar quality in the future.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • DW kits without reinforcement rings may affect sound, with some owners debating their impact on resonance and tone quality.

    Source
  • The unique green and gold color combination of the kit limits its market appeal due to its specific aesthetic, potentially impacting resale speed and price.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • It's noted that the standard maple kit is now more expensive than the maple SSC due to changes in tooling at DW.

    Source
  • A 2017 DW Collector's Series in excellent condition can be considered a great deal at $2000, potentially profitable upon resale.

    Source
  • In Australia, DW Collector's kits are particularly valuable due to their high cost and limited availability, suggesting a potential resale price of around $4000 AUD for the whole kit.

    Source

Build quality

  • DW Collector's Series used non-Keller maple shells post-2017, which some consider an excellent deal compared to older Keller shells.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Professional services are available for shortening bass drums, though this may negatively impact resale value.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • The DW 9000 double bass pedal is seen as offering diminishing returns; some suggest downgrading to a DW 5000 or Iron Cobra for sufficient performance at a lower cost.

DW Collectors Series Review (Pro Drummer Guide) for 2025

thedrumninja.com

The DW Collectors Series Custom Drum Set dazzles with its immense customization options and superb construction quality, making it a dream kit for many drummers. The ability to personalize wood types and shell sizes ensures a unique sound, while the craftsmanship speaks to its high performance and durability. However, the jaw-dropping price tag could deter potential buyers, especially since the snare is not included. While unmatched in quality, cheaper alternatives like Sonor's SQ2 or Pearl's Masterworks might offer similar satisfaction at a lower cost. Still, for those who can afford it, this kit promises a lifetime of unparalleled drumming bliss.

DW Collector's Series Cherry Mahogany Kit review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

DW's Collector Series Cherry Mahogany drum set impresses with its superb build quality and refined tone. The combination of cherry and mahogany delivers a warm, articulate sound, while the kit's craftsmanship is evident in its exceptional lacquer finish and precise tuning capabilities. Despite its hefty price tag, the kit's attention to detail, from tension lugs to the inclusion of extras like spare rods and a polishing cloth, ensures it's a worthy investment for serious drummers. The snare, in particular, stands out with its crisp, resonant tone. Ideal for those seeking premium sound and durability.

"You know, it looks big but it’s not. There’s not a lot to it. The sizes of the drums are big. The kick’s a 24?, the toms are 12? and 13?, and the floor toms are 16? and 18?. All I have is two crash cymbals, two Chinas, a ride, and one China behind me. There’s not much to it. I mean, Neil Peart has a massive kit, I don’t. The core of my kit is basically the same kit that I started with—snare, kick, rack, and floor."

I play a DW Collector’s series kit made of cherry wood; it’s my favorite. The cherry really adds warmth while still packing a mighty punch, almost making the drums sound a bit bigger than they really are. I have a 9×13 rack tom, 16×16 floor tom, and a 14×24 kick. The snare is a DW 8″-deep black nickel over brass. It is sensitive with tons of crack, with an almost woodsy low end. I also have a set of tuned steel blossom bells made by Pete Englehart.
