This bass boasts period-accurate neck profile and playing feel, harking back to the iconic 1960s Mustang Bass. Not only does it look the part, but it also delivers the seismic tone that shot the Mustang Bass to legendary status.

The vintage-style, 4-saddle bridge, threaded saddles, and vintage-style tuning machines don't just enhance the bass's aesthetics; they also provide rock-solid performance and tuning stability. Additional features like master volume and tone controls, chrome hardware, and a 4-bolt neck plate only enrich the playing experience.

CONS

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Fender Mustang Bass.

Mods and upgrades

  • Owners suggest Aguilar pickups to enhance tone, particularly in PJ Mustang models, noting significant improvements in sound quality.

    Source
  • A modified Mustang with Aguilar pickups, CTS 250k pots, and LaBella flats dramatically enhances tone, making it sound bigger and more present than a Jaguar or P Bass.

    Source
  • Owners recommend La Bella Deep Talkin' 760F-MUS flat-wound strings specifically made for the Mustang to enhance tone and feel.

    Source

Other

  • The Mustang's popularity is partly driven by its retro look, which aligns with indie genre aesthetics and branding, further fueled by Fender's strategic artist endorsements.

    Source

User experience

  • The Mustang's small neck and fast playability are noted, with players appreciating its lightweight design, which reduces physical strain during performances.

    Source
  • Owners appreciate the Mustang's lightweight build, which alleviates physical strain during long gigs, contrasting with heavier P and J basses.

    Source
  • Some users find the arm contour absence on the Mustang's body uncomfortable, influencing their decision to choose other models with contours.

    Source
  • Several owners found the lower notes on stock strings lacking until switching to flat wounds, which improved overall tonal satisfaction.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Squier CV Mustang Bass offers high quality and ease of play, though Harley Benton's new Mustang-style bass could challenge its market with a lower price point.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • Short scale contributes to a consistent timbre and roundness across the fretboard, benefiting indie music by allowing riffs to feel uniform and present in the mix.

    Source
  • The Mustang's PJ pickup configuration provides a punchy sound with mids presence, but soloing the P pickup won't fully replicate a traditional P bass tone.

    Source
  • The Mustang's string-through body design accommodates medium-scale strings, enhancing its tonal options despite the 30" scale.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The Mustang's ease of play and lighter weight make it appealing for indie musicians coming from guitar backgrounds, offering a comfortable transition to bass playing.

    Source
  • The Mustang excels in sitting well in a full band mix with synths or ambient soundscapes, making it ideal for modern electro/synth pop-influenced indie bands.

    Source
  • The Mustang excels in genres requiring a warm, thumpy sound, such as funk and vintage rock, demonstrated by its use in Average White Band recordings.

    Source
  • The JMJ Mustang is highlighted for superior playability and recording appeal, often preferred by audio engineers for its classic Fender tone.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Compared to P basses, Mustangs offer faster action and easier note bending, making them appealing for players with smaller hands or those seeking a less physically demanding instrument.

    Source
  • The Squier Mustang's string-through body is noted for achieving a long scale sound, offering tonal depth not typically associated with short scale basses.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Users report frequent fret buzz, attributed to the Mustang's design, suggesting a professional setup and flat wound strings to alleviate the issue.

    Source
  • Truss rod access on certain Mustangs requires neck removal, posing a challenge for quick adjustments compared to more modern designs.

Fun bass an good playability, not very versatie

This bass does one sound, Its a very good sound, but there's not a lot of versatility here. That said, its a great sound that works really well for a lot of classic styles of music. I use flats aon mine and with the short scale I get a great tone for old school R&B and blues. It also does the punk rock thing great . I don't recommend this as your first bass but as an additional tonal option.

The P-Bass's little brother

I use my MIJ Fender Mustangs a lot. The smaller neck & lightweight body are perfect whenever I have a long rehearsal or need to play more than one set. Sometimes, a long scale, bass can be tiring. The special designed Seymour Duncan Mustang bass pickups sound very close to the Fender Precision pick up. Like it's big brother, the Mustang bass is a solid, reliable tone machine.

great bass

Hannah uses this on "Breaking The Girl" both studio and live (RHCP Cover). I modified it with a DiMarzio Will Power bass neck pickup and a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound J bass pickup set in middle and bridge positions. 1 volume 1 tone per pickup and then master volume and master tone, coil split on the neck pickup, 6-way switch (6th position is all pickups on), and in/out of phase switching. her's is in Fiesta Red.

Excellent!

Won't be too extensive here. The Fender Mustang was my first bass and the short scale really helped me learn my way around the fretboard quite quickly. My favourite aspect of this bass was the ability to get a really round tone, similar to a double bass. I've been unable to reproduce this on anything else I've used so far.

Also as a short individual, this bass matched my image quite nicely. :D
