Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Gretsch G5420T Electromatic Hollow Body.

Value and pricing

  • Achieving a pro-level sound with upgraded pickups and wiring can be more cost-effective than purchasing higher-end models like the White Falcon.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Some users recommend upgrading the bridge to an ABM or Tru Arc for reduced rattle and enhanced tone.

    Source
  • Compton one-piece bridges are suggested to improve tone and sustain, although installation requires precise setup.

    Source
  • TV Jones Classic and Classic Plus pickups significantly enhance clarity and sparkle, aligning the G5420T's tone closer to professional models.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Tuning stability issues often stem from the nut; replacing it with a Tusq or Zero-Glide can be beneficial.

    Source
  • Heavy strings, such as 12s or 13s, are recommended to improve tone and sustain due to the shallow break angle at the bridge.

    Source
  • It's been reported that the factory setup might include uneven wood pieces for the body, affecting the overall aesthetics.

    Source
  • One owner found the neck to be very dry and recommended using lemon oil to condition it.

    Source

User experience

  • Some limited edition models, like the 135th anniversary, exhibit nearly flawless finishes compared to standard versions, with only minor sanding marks visible under clear coats.

    Source
  • It's been observed that the guitar may require a setup to adjust the high action to personal preferences.

    Source
  • Some users reported needing to polish the frets, suggesting they may come unpolished out of the box.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The blacktop Filter’Tron pickups perform best with pole pieces cranked close to the strings, enhancing clarity and sustain.

    Source
  • The B60 Bigsby on the G5420T generally performs well; tuning issues are more likely related to the nut than the Bigsby itself.

    Source

Build quality

  • Owners report hairline cracks near the input/output jack, indicating potential vulnerabilities in the finish that may require attention.

    Source
  • A user noted that the neck binding is the cheapest possible, indicating cost-saving measures in the construction.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Owners have found the build quality to be superior to some Epiphone models, though not on par with more expensive brands like Gibson.

    Source
  • An owner compared the paint quality unfavorably to more expensive guitars, indicating it's just "okay" but not exceptional.

Gretsch Electromatic 5420T Hollowbody Electric Guitar - Premier Guitar

premierguitar.com

The Gretsch G5420T Electromatic Hollow Body impresses with its smooth playability and lively, feedback-resistant resonance thanks to new trestle block bracing and FT-5E Filter’Tron pickups. It offers a rich, balanced tone with articulate overdrive potential, making it ideal for rockabilly and psychedelic genres. However, the thick blue finish and slightly lackluster vintage bite may not please purists. Despite this, its playability rivals much pricier models, cementing it as a strong contender for those seeking an affordable Gretsch with classic vibes and modern enhancements.

Gretsch G5420T Electromatic Hollow Body review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

The Gretsch G5420T Electromatic Hollow Body impresses with its classic style, sound, and playability. The Fairlane Blue finish adds a striking visual allure, while the build quality maintains Gretsch's reputation. Despite needing some pickup height adjustments and the bridge pickup's limited spacing, the guitar offers a rich, unpredictable tone that embraces the iconic 'Gretsch sound'. The lack of roller saddles may slightly affect tuning stability, but the instrument's versatility makes it a standout for genres like rockabilly and rock 'n' roll. Overall, it's a great option for those seeking vintage-inspired sound without breaking the bank.

Nothing is Like a Gretsch. No... Thing...

True to form, I "discovered" the great Chet Atkins later in my life. And (apart from his stellar playing), one of the first things I noticed was that he used Gretsch guitars throughout most of his career.

Gretsch's Professional line is far too good and far too expensive for an amateur such as myself. But their Electromatics are, indeed, superior instruments. Thus, when I found one of these G5420Ts WITH an OEM Gretsch case for a mere $475, I jumped at the opportunity.

Now, I know having a Gretsch won't make me play like Mr. Atkins. But it feels great knowing that I'm using a spectacular guitar with an unmatched history.

geetarcharlie17

Nice, big, and blue!

I tried to add more to my John Frusciante-esque guitar rig but I cannot afford a full-on White Falcon, so I went with my next choice: an Electromatic! I love how full the sound is here and I love the attached Bigsby tremolo. The fingerboard and string action feel nice and the overall look to me is amazing.

Excellent guitar and springboard for modding

Great sound with playability. Good for anything from rock to jazz, blues to experimental.

With upgrade sounds TWANG!!!!!

To recreate the crunchy twangy sound of Eddie Cochran, I upgrade this guitar with TV JONES T-ARMOND on the BRIDGE (really clear and 50's single coil) and Seymour Duncan Antiquities P90. Really woody sound. I love the harmonic feedback it creates, with a punchy sound.

tonytheant3

Gretsch for a good price

I have owned this guitar for a bit less than a year. I got this guitar because I am Brian Setzer fan. it plays just as good as the gretsches that cost thousands. the neck pickup sounds beautiful, but the bridge is a bit cloudy sounding. got it on sale for 500, my favorite guitar.

drew_pelto

Light and versatile

I got mine two months ago and absolutely love it. Lightweight, and works well on anything I play. I don't have the problems with detuning when using the whammy anywhere near as badly as I do on my strat.

Great Guitar, especially for the price

I enjoy playing this guitar - it has a unique tone that is perfect when it is. I seem to have a guitar for every occasion and this one fits the bill quite often. Great twang, great for controlled feedback. Woody and full bodied tone. Great mouthfeel.

davidlachlanlewis

Lovely guitar

But watch the tuning - make sure you get it professionally set up. Otherwise it's a great guitar for rock and roll, jazz, country and rockabilly. Neck is nice, and guitar is well appointed.
