Too much magic to summarize...

I've followed Scott Hamptone for over 13 years+ I'd guess. Not only is his gear flawless but for those who don't know a few facts-

He designed a tube pre (stereo) that is a match for any of the "mythologized" models from UA...I'm not gonna run down the list...brand recognition is so powerful it muddies things...basics: not only are his 1/2 the price he would, forgive the all caps but SELL YOU IT FINISHED, OR! FOR EVEN CHEAPER THE PLANS & PCB STYLE KIT TO BUILD ON YOUR OWN FOR DIRT CHREAP!!! For the TapeOp readers I knew he was a messiah-a man who just wanted to empower those of us without HUGE wallets with gear we only dreamed of before.

For the quality of the gear and the man behind it-more that enough to move you to check out his flawless gear-

Flawless. The man & his products...

Sorry, had to be said. As for this Hamptone Tube Pre-

Cristiline clarity & warm or saturate whatever it is you might like and feel like you've the power of the Gods. Purity. Decimation. All at far less the cost of it's often more venerated but lesser counterparts...likely one of the same pre you've been dreaming about...this is equal or better in twice its price range.

DI, Phantom Power, Low Shelf, Pad, Phase all included of course as you'd expect. Got an issue? You're covered. The man is more audio philanthropist than capitalist. Try & find that quality of gear & manufacturer at this level & tell me when you do. I wanna know them.

Side note: he's just cooked up the most unreal spring reverb I've seen. Something him & The Decemberist's cooked up I believe. I'll link a video to the pre but just do yourself, your sound, AND your wallet a favor and visit his site. Change your life type stuff. Changed mine for sure.

His website: http://hamptone.com

Baffled this info isn't already here. Fuck name dropping but he's everywhere-chances are someone you love has a piece of his gear, had their gear serviced or modified by him, or restored or just outright built a mic for them...& the power supply. Restored an old vacuum tube or ribbon...I could go on forever because he has.

5 stars on the gear. An extra 5 stars for the human behind it who will back it up 10000%. Buy something amazing & feel good doing it.

interestingly, a lot of Hampton's stuff is based on old Altec gear, just hot rodded... you know the stuff, the green units? the compressor being the most famous for having been used on John Lennon a few times (supposedly) but various mic pres and line amps being far better designs only held back by component quality and still pretty far under the radar

I'm not sure about the tube pre though, never looked at the schematic for it. But when a friend of mine was building some JFET pres we were looking at the hamptone circuit and noticed it was very much an Altec s he wound up backtracking and making his own riff on the Altec design which sounded very good with the right transformers and his beefed up power supply. The nutter actually printed the boards himself too even though I encouraged him to buy Hamptone boards and add his own parts.... he had some EE reasons for wanting to change the layout that were over my head. That nerdy I am not.

I do indeed remember the Altec gear! Oh yeah, been meaning to ask-is there a private messaging service on this site? I couldn't find one...
