Review - Ibanez 2609B Black Eagle 4-String Bass - Bass Musician Magazine, The Face of Bass

bassmusicianmagazine.com

The Ibanez 2609B Black Eagle Bass is a nostalgic nod to the past, offering vintage aesthetics and sound. Its mahogany body and maple fretboard, coupled with custom inlays and chrome hardware, deliver a timeless look. The Alnico Super J pickups provide a classic, passive electronic setup, appealing to purists. While its style and sound are commendable, the bass may not cater to modern versatility seekers due to its adherence to traditional features. Overall, this reissue is a positive choice for those seeking a trip down memory lane with a reliable, beautifully crafted instrument.

In the YouTube video "Kurt Cobain - Creation (Upgrade)" by RareNirvana, it is evident that Kurt Cobain recorded a demo in 1987-1988 using an Ibanez 2609B Black Eagle Bass while singing. This bass does not belong to Cobain but to Krist Novoselic, and Cobain played it upside down, as it is a right-handed instrument.

Krist had 3–4 these, one of which I modified to have a rosewood neck. Also i believe he took out the pickgaurd of the bass. These basses were frequently toured throughout the band's career. One can be seen in the Sliver video and parts of the footage used for the Sub Pop In Bloom video. Krist's original Black Eagle is on exhibition at the Experience Music Project.
