Owner Insights

User experience

  • Owners find the intonation exceptional and the bass remarkably quiet in terms of extraneous noise from the preamp.

    Source
  • Transitioning to fanned frets is reported as seamless, with users adjusting within minutes, particularly impacting playability in the upper register when using chords.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The active/passive selector allows for a Fender-like tone in passive mode and a punchier sound when active, while the mid selector toggle is generally set and forgotten by users.

    Source
  • The stain finish on the SRFF805 is appreciated, but some owners note perceived cost-saving measures, such as a square fretboard near the nut.

    Source
  • The SRFF805's Bortolini pickups offer significant tonal flexibility, enhancing its appeal as a primary bass for varied musical styles.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Users suggest replacing the factory strings with D'Addario Super Brights for a brighter sound profile.

Comparisons

  • The Ibanez SRFF805's fanned frets are narrower than those on Dingwall models, affecting the scale length of the lower strings.

    Source

    Source

Build quality

  • Some owners wish for a maple neck option, indicating a preference for its tonal qualities.

    Source
  • Owners note the nut may require filing due to its sharp corners, particularly noticeable when reaching for the 1st fret on the low B string.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The SRFF806 is preferred for its looser C string tension compared to typical 35" scale basses, providing a unique advantage for 6-string bass players.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Although priced closely to a Dingwall Combustion in some regions, the SRFF805 may be a more economical choice for those prioritizing a 6-string configuration.

Versatility

You would've expect it but this bass can used for virtually anything. I play everything from funk, r&b, jazz, singer-songwriter, pop punk, metal, and prog. I use this bass for all of it and it never lets me down. Sad it's discontinued because I would hate to lose this bass and not be able to get another.
