Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Ibanez Talman TC 620.

Build quality

  • The Resoncast/MDF body makes the guitar noticeably heavy, requiring a padded strap for comfort.

    Source
  • Older Talman models feature chrome top dome knobs, unlike the white strat-style knobs found on newer models, providing a distinct visual appeal.

    Source
  • MDF, marketed as 'Resoncast', was used due to a 1990s Japanese lumber shortage, affecting the tone and repairability.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Minor setup revealed a sitar-like buzz on the 9th fret G string, indicating fret work is needed.

    Source
  • The MDF body is prone to damage during hardware removal, as seen when bridge studs removed chunks of the top.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The guitar features unusually hot pickups, making it suitable for noisy Alt Rock styles.

    Source
  • The guitar has a 9.5" neck radius, distinct from the more common 12", offering a different feel.

    Source
  • The Kent Armstrong Sky P100 pickups are noted for being very quiet, enhancing the guitar's versatility and reducing hum.

    Source

Other

  • The guitar's bridge is distinct, unlike the strat-style bridge found on similar models like the TC220.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • The Talman TC 620's pickups resemble P-90s but are actually stacked humbuckers, designed by Kent Armstrong, offering low noise and high output around 20k Ohms.

    Source
  • A user installed a Hipshot tremolo bridge but had to sand the block down slightly as it was too large, showcasing customization challenges.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Talmans often have a 12" neck radius, which contrasts with the Jag-Stang's 7.25", affecting playability preferences among players.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners note difficulty finding aftermarket parts like pickguards for the Talman, limiting customization compared to more flexible Fender models.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • With its unique stacked humbuckers, the Talman offers a fat tone suitable for players seeking a high-output, low-noise sound.

    Source
  • A 4-way switch with a push-pull tone knob allows series, parallel, and out-of-phase tones, ideal for achieving Peter Green or Jimmy Page sounds.

I liked my first Talman so much I had to buy another

This Talman in particular came with soapbar pickups as opposed to the lipsticks of the 630. I replaced the stock soapbars with P-90's but kept everything else stock and it sounds amazing. Another composite body that sounds INCREDIBLE. If you see my old gear you'll see I was once a Gibson/Fender classic wood, etc aficionado, but all that went out the window once my eyes were opened to the sound and playability of guitars like these. Now I have no preconceptions about any equipment whatsoever, to the point where I now buy a lot of "lawsuit" guitars and skip home knowing I have a 78 Les Paul (same exact materials) for $100 or so LOL! At least it used to be that way. Now everyone's caught on so lawsuit guitars have skyrocketed in price. But, I digress...

Just couple of month before his death, Jeff purchased a dark green Talman TC620. The guitar had a pearloid pickguard, and P-90 pickups.

It is quite possible that this wasn’t Jeff’s first Talman, as there are photos of him playing a grey TC620 couple of years prior to this.

John used to play a couple Ibanez Talmans during the early days of The Weakerthans. One was dark green with p-90's and the other one was black with humbuckers.
