Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Ibanez JEM-JR.

Mods and upgrades

  • The Gotoh GE1996T tremolo is a direct drop-in replacement for the stock tremolo on the Ibanez JEM-JR, enhancing stability without requiring extensive modifications.

    Source
  • Upgrading pickups can be worthwhile for those seeking a specific sound, although the stock pickups are generally well-regarded for versatile use.

    Source
  • Some users recommend upgrading the tremolo to a Schaller or original Floyd Rose for improved stability.

    Source

    Source
  • Owners suggest wrapping extra string around tuning pegs for high E and B strings to easily reattach if they break at the bridge.

    Source
  • Floyd Rose bridge maintenance requires balancing multiple adjustments, impacting string action, intonation, neck relief, and tuning; setup can be outsourced to professionals.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners describe the Ibanez JEM-JR as a reliable and robust guitar, offering good playability with minimal setup adjustments out of the box.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Ideal for styles like Polyphia, though not suited for frequent tuning changes due to the floyd rose bridge.

    Source
  • Frequent tuning changes are essential for playing metal genres, which often use drop tunings, making a hardtail or alternative bridge preferable for ease of use.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Schecter guitars are recommended as strong alternatives for metal, offering better tuning flexibility than the JEM-JR for those frequently changing tunings.

Ibanez Jem Jr. Review

addictedtogear.com

The Ibanez JEM-JR White is a budget-friendly tribute to Steve Vai's iconic model, offering sleek playability with its slim neck and distinctive design elements like the 'vine of life' inlay and monkey grip. While the guitar is easy to play and visually striking, it falls short with its mediocre stock pickups and a lower-tier bridge that may not satisfy purists. The super white pickguard deviates from the classic look, and although setup is solid out of the box, potential buyers should consider upgrades for maximum performance. Overall, it's a decent choice for fans of 80s shred aesthetics on a budget.

Pleasant surprise

I ordered it with low expectations but everything seems to be great with this guitar. I bought the first edition 1P01 that has mahogany body and rosewood fretboard i believe is far better than meranti body and jatoba fretboard that 1P02 now has. Decent pickups, hold up tuning well and overall beautiful guitar for those who admire Steve Vai. The only negative i have to say about it is that cosmo black hardware start to lose colour and became silver.

very good

I got Steve’s signature on it aswell when he came to Estonia. I had bought a vip pass so i could actually talk to him and it was a wonderful experience.

trenova

main floyd guitar

Is any incredibly good for the money. Its a rock solid instrument that can stand some abuse. It does have a smaller neck then the standard Jems along with mahogany for the body and not basswood. I my main guitar for Eb standard when i need a floyd rose

sangceu

More like a 4.5/5 stars.

After about a year or so, the Ibanez floating bridge just kind of gave out, but that's to be expected at it's price-point.

Amazing guitar

This guitar is very nice. I use it as my main. Everything is perfect out of the box, and the feel and tone is perfect.

lennyg

honestly, great

if i didn't fuck up the paintjob, i would've still loved this guitar.

rikoflishas

that is a nice looking guitar, how are the pickups?

lennyg

i replaced the original pickups with some seymour duncans, but the originals are really good

bthompson2020

My favorite guitar, I love everything about it

I'm modding is with a kill switch scalloping on the 21st-24th frets and putting pickup switches on it
