Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Jackson Pro Series Mick Thomson Soloist SL2.

Features and functionality

  • The pickups feature a hidden "SEVEN" marking visible only when raised, confirming authenticity of Mick Thomson's signature pickups.

    Source
  • The Floyd Rose-style bridge includes a fixed horizontal plate, making it functionally similar to a hard-tail bridge for more stable tuning.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Users report the action is initially set too low and requires adjustment; tuning is done from the bridge, not the neck.

    Source
  • A regular nut replacement improves playability by correcting the E string alignment, preventing strings from being too close to the fingerboard edges.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Owners compare the tuning stability to a hard-tail bridge, noting it doesn't have the same issues as a full Floyd Rose system.

    Source
  • Owners find the Fishman pickups superior to EMG 81s, noting the latter can produce a "thud" sound during palm muting, which is less desirable.

    Source

User experience

  • The guitar comes with 10-46 gauge strings, but users consider switching to 11-52 for better performance in concert pitch.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Users recommend swapping the stock pickups for Fishman models to achieve a crisper tone without muddiness, particularly enhancing palm muting clarity.

    Source
  • Guiker locking tuners, available on Amazon, are a popular budget modification for improved tuning stability on various guitar models.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • There's a sentiment that Indonesian-made models lack quality compared to Mexican counterparts, despite being priced similarly, leading to frustration among users.

Beast of a Guitar!

Picked up this guitar second hand and it immediately became the best guitar in my collection. #2 isn't even close. My father who has been playing guitar for 40+ years said "This is probably the best overall electric guitar I've ever played" and he hates anything that isn't in standard tuning! If you're a metal fan you should get this. If you're a Slipknot fan, you NEED this!

Preferred Settings + Usage:

I play this guitar through my Omega Granophyte Plug-in and my Crate GFX 1200H. I rarely use pedals with this guitar, and these amps, because there's simply no need. Any pedals would be gravy with these combinations.

One of the best guitars I've played

Thin, comfortable neck with locking nut, good woods and killer pickups
