Description

Experience the electrifying blend of iconic design and cutting-edge performance with the Jackson RR5 Rhoads. This solid body electric guitar stands as a testament to Jackson's legacy, inspired by the legendary Randy Rhoads. Its aggressive V-shaped body and neck-through construction promise not only striking visuals but unmatched tonal quality and sustain. Crafted from alder, the body is paired with a fast maple neck, offering a comfortable grip ideal for both searing solos and chunky power chords.

The compound-radius rosewood fingerboard is a dream for guitarists who enjoy low-action bends, seamlessly transitioning from a more pronounced curve at the nut for easy chording, to a flatter surface near the neck joint. This thoughtful design ensures that players can achieve maximum expressiveness without the risk of fretting out. Seymour Duncan TB4 humbuckers serve up a powerful and articulate sound, perfect for a range of genres from hard rock to heavy metal.

Gold hardware adds a touch of elegance, while the shark fin inlays and pointed headstock provide the unmistakable Jackson flair. Whether you're on stage or in the studio, this guitar doesn’t just demand attention—it commands it.

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Jackson RR5 Rhoads.

Build quality

  • Pre-2010 models lack binding, indicating a specific production period and differentiating from models post-2010 which included bindings.

    Source
  • The guitar maintains excellent condition with immaculate "pointy bits," indicating durable build quality despite prior use.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The neck-through-body design remained consistent from 1998 until 2012, with changes only in finish options.

    Source
  • The guitar features an iconic ivory/black pinstripe finish and gold hardware, enhancing its visual appeal.

    Source

User experience

  • The RR5's serial number system, especially for Japanese models, is complex and often undocumented, making dating models challenging for owners.

    Source
  • The pick guard shows wear, the only notable sign of use on an otherwise well-maintained instrument.

    Source
  • Owners prefer the feel of higher-end Rhoads models, noting a "cheap" feel in the JS series compared to Pro models.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • The action was initially set high, requiring truss rod adjustments for optimal playability.

    Source
  • Changing the battery for EMGs is straightforward with an electronics cavity cover, requiring unscrewing the cover to swap the battery.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Owners are not completely satisfied with the JB pickup at the neck, suggesting adjustments or potential replacements.

    Source
  • Installing EMG pickups requires extending quick connect wires due to the long path from the control cavity to the output jack.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The RRT-3 is compared favorably to an original Randy Rhoads Concord for its specs and feel, with mahogany bodies preferred over JS models' basswood for sturdiness.

    Source
  • The neck on Jacksons is notably thinner and wider with a larger radius compared to Schecters, which are generally thicker and more narrow.

    Source
  • Duncan Distortion pickups in the RRT-3 are noted as very hot, though some users find them too bright and opt for replacements like James Hetfield's EMGs for a different tone.

Nai Palm uses a white Jackson Randy Rhoads V to record her lush guitar playing on her solo album "Needle Paw" and has used it for the duration of her tour. 2021 Premier Guitar interview writes:

"It was partially due to [singer/songwriter and guitarist] Lianne La Havas, who called me on her birthday, drunk from Costa Rica, while I was looking for a guitar," Palm laughs, explaining how she ended up with her white Jackson V. "I went into the heavy metal guitar section to get some space to hear her, and after the call thought, 'Fuck, I'm going to try the spiky Randy Rhoads guitar.' A big part of the attraction was its playability. The action was great and I loved that you can get both a clean and gritty sound from it. I have super-little hands, and the D'Angelico—although it was a vibe—was super heavy. The biggest part of my attraction to guitars I like is the playability. If it feels good to play, I'm more likely to be motivated to write on it. I also love the juxtaposition of playing gentle shit on it. It pisses off the purist metal heads, but I like to think outside of the box." Palm prefers to pair her pointy Jackson with a Fender Twin Reverb.
