Korg MR16 (EMM May 85)

muzines.co.uk

Korg's MR16 is a mixed bag—a MIDI-driven drum machine that leaves out sequencing, demanding you pair it with an external MIDI keyboard and sequencer. While its 19 PCM drum sounds offer a decent array, they suffer from digital noise and limited dynamic range. The design cleverly maps sounds to adjacent keyboard notes, facilitating rapid play. Yet, the absence of onboard sequencing makes it less intuitive compared to competitors with built-in software. Korg's reliance on external software might alienate potential buyers unless future software developments make this setup more appealing. Ultimately, the MR16 performs its intended function well but questions remain if it's a necessary purchase in a MIDI-rich era.
