Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Korg DS-8.

Features and functionality

  • The Korg DS-8 doesn't have an octave select button, which can limit some users' flexibility in performance and composition.

    Source
  • The keyboard features a Yamaha keybed with aftertouch, making it a capable MIDI controller with expressive potential.

    Source
  • The DS-8 uses a two DCO structure with FM between them and a "timbre" section to simulate a low pass filter.

    Source
  • The big LCD screen provides comprehensive menu navigation once the battery is replaced and the system is operational.

    Source

User experience

  • It's noted for creating nostalgic sounds reminiscent of old cartoons and sci-fi movies, enhanced by simple modulation and noise techniques.

    Source
  • Despite being a 4-op synth similar to the DX-100, the DS-8's parameters are simplified, allowing for quick sound creation with hands-on sliders.

    Source
  • Owners note the DS-8 as being less complex to program than DX-series synths, despite navigating menus.

    Source
  • Some buttons, like the "combination" button, can cause the synth to crash, needing a power reset; this is linked to battery issues.

    Source

Build quality

  • The DS-8 may come with an old display; however, some units remain in pristine condition if lightly used, maintaining bright and clear screens.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The DS-8 is described as having a brightness and ease of access that some FM synths, like the DX11, lack.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • At $90, the DS-8 is considered a good deal, especially when compared to higher-priced alternatives like the SY77 or DX100.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • It can serve as a polyphonic tone source for processing with modular setups, offering unique FM sounds.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Installing a CR 2032 battery holder with a wire connection can resolve glitch mode issues caused by a dead backup battery.

    Source
  • Replacement of the backup battery requires removing the bottom screws and desoldering the old battery before soldering in the new holder.

    Source
  • Nonfunctional LEDs likely require accessing circuit boards with sliders, diodes, and LEDs, a more involved repair than battery replacement.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • An MCR-02 or MCR-03 memory card can be used to load and save presets, avoiding internal battery replacements.

Critic Reviews

Korg DS8 (MT Jul 87)

muzines.co.uk

The Korg DS-8 digital synthesizer attempts to make FM synthesis more accessible with an intuitive interface and performance controls. It's praised for offering a wide range of sounds and user-friendly programming that simplifies the complexities of FM synthesis. However, it still suffers from digital noise on bass sounds and lacks the depth found in Yamaha's more advanced models. While its onboard effects are a nice addition, they fall short in richness compared to dedicated units. Overall, the DS-8 is a competent but unremarkable entry in the FM synth market, appealing to those seeking ease of use over sonic innovation.

Korg DS8 Digital Synthesizer (SOS Mar 87)

muzines.co.uk

The Korg DS-8 is a capable digital synthesizer that offers a fresh take on FM synthesis with its user-friendly editing features and built-in digital delay. It stands out with its eight-voice multitimbral capabilities and a responsive touch-sensitive keyboard, which makes it appealing for performance and sequencing. However, it faces stiff competition from contemporaries like Yamaha's updated DX7 and Elka's EK44, which might overshadow its market presence. While the DS-8 provides a good array of sounds and effects, its overall impact is somewhat muted by the evolving landscape of synthesizer technology in its time.

classic 4 OP FM synthesis with digital Effects section from the mid 80s

I find this is a beautifully implemented machine, not too complex to program compared to all the other FM synths of that era and more powerful just because of the effects section.

Essentially you get a DX11 / TX81Z sound, but the way you design the sound has no real typical FM structure, which makes it both weird and cool to work with. If you ever played with those PSS-470s or any of those other Yamahas home FM synths that has the synth drawbars, well imagine having 20x the features on 4-OP + the effects and the proper MIDI implementation. This is basically a beast on top of the FM mountain, with the DX7, as simple as that.

Hmmm

This was an interesting FM synth, made some cool sounds. But it was not interesting enough to keep me interested.. Gets used a lot for ambient music, and had a cool BBD fx section.
