Korg TR Rack

soundonsound.com

Korg’s TR-Rack packs the Trinity’s powerful synthesis into a compact, affordable module, delighting fans with its rich sound and expansive effects. Boasting 32MB of ROM and double the patches of its inspiration, it’s a sound designer’s dream. However, its limited 32-voice polyphony and lack of full front-panel editing nudge it slightly behind some competitors. Still, the included editing software saves the day, offering deep control over its impressive capabilities. For those craving Trinity quality without the hefty price tag, the TR-Rack is a sound investment.

Fun and quirky

I've never committed to teaching myself how to program this thing. There are some nice presets from the previous owner, however, and I have not yet been able to replicate them with other hardware gear, so this thing is a keeper. I find it to be very digital sounding (surprise!), and that's what I love it for. I'm sure there's much more fun to be had if I give it some time.

mikantsumikiwi

A amazing synth but does have some cons.

My experience with the tr-rack was fun to use, it did allowed me to experiment when it comes to music making and i am pretty happy how this synth came to be when using it.

I do have some pros and cons on it that i want to talk about.

Pros:

Amazing Sound quality

Great selection of presets or patches.

Excellent Filters

Impressive Effects.

Includes the TRI-PBS Boards (But no sampler function)

Looks pretty great.

Has a selectable patch category.

24 bit Sample quality.

Cons:

The LED Interface

The lack of the GM mode which was originally on the keyboard version but also impossible to import through SYSEX.

32 Voice Polyphony (While it a okay amount of polyphony but by then other brands switch to 64 voices)

Lack of a Value Wheel.

Making Patches and presets is impossible unless through a editor.

The multi timbral mode not displaying the patches names, making it hard to remember which patch is which.

Cannot use the A or B banks to load your custom patches.

Has no sampler option.

Tiny buttons

I believe that all of the pros and cons i can give for this synth.

Preferred Settings + Usage:

My favorite TR-Rack presets are, Sun Bells, Solar Motion, Analog Strings, That Heaven Vibe, Tsunami Warning,

Great church organs

I use it only for church organ sounds. The TR-RACK offers the best church organ samples I've ever heard. I also own some other romplers (e.g. Integra-7, JD-990) but nothing to compare with such a good tones. With a Lexicon LXP-15 to build a cathedral reverb, is terrific.

bradflora

Sounds a bit pinched and sampled by has lots of sounds

Have had this forever and used it for strings and keyboard tones. You can get them very cheaply now!

ebowglow

Awesome synth module.

I love everything about this module; the patches, the way banks are stored. The only issues is that is has tiny button which make it a bit hard to program.

Elegant and Powerful

A beautiful synth I still use. Sparkling sounds, ethereal sounds, big sounds... Just beautiful. I have two units.

"I've got an 8100 Power Mac that was basically outdated the second I bought it. I use Performer, and I have four 760 Roland samplers. I have a Korg TR rack sound module, a Korg O1RW sound module, a Korg X3R, an old Proteus FX and a Roland JD-1080. I've got a Roland R-8M. My keyboard is a Roland D-70. I have an old Ensoniq ASR-10 sampler. I have a Tascam DA-88 and a Mackie 32*8 mixing console, plus a couple of Lexicon reverb units."
