Description

The KF-1 is an improved clone of the 60's Kay Fuzztone. The original Kay Fuzztone is a great fuzz with ripping octave overtones. Similar to the Univox Superfuzz or Ibanez Standard fuzz. The interesting feature of the Kay is that the tone control for the pedal is controlled by foot via the treadle. This enables you to conjure different textures to the fuzz tone while playing. Interest in original orange Kay Fuzztone resurged in the last few years mostly due to the fact that The Edge of U2 used it for the intro to the song “Elevation.” Apparently, it is also a favourite of producer Daniel Lanois.

Features on the KF-1 include increased output volume with external Volume control. (The originals have a low output level.) Also, an improved, low output impedance which means the tone will remain consistent when other pedals are added after the pedal in the signal chain.

The sweep has been widened and spread out more evenly over the range of the treadle. This makes it easier to dial in different tonal settings.

Unlike the original, the KF-1 can be turned on and off with your foot like a standard wah pedal and includes a LED. (On the originals you have to lean down and switch a slider switch with your hand to turn the pedal on and off.)

Whenever I build a KF-1 I compare it to an original Kay to ensure it sounds just right.
