Chipsynth MD delivers an impressive homage to Sega Mega Drive's sound with modern twists, featuring robust FM synthesis capabilities and a rich effects suite. Its six-layer architecture and versatile step sequencing open up a world of sonic possibilities, making it more than just a nostalgic tool. However, the user interface can be perplexing, and certain features like sample playback leave room for improvement. The placement of the vibrato LFO rate in the settings feels like a design misstep. Overall, while it shines in its core emulation and sound design features, some quirks may frustrate users looking for seamless operation.

An instant favourite

I bought this today (at the time of writing this), knowing some things about this synth via friends and such. I am a HUGE sucker for that Sega Genesis/Megadrive sound so naturally I was expecting to like this, having used other plugins to simulate its tone (like Dexed and DX7 V).

I did not expect to love this plugin so much, but it's got EVERYTHING. The DAC emulations are spot on, and it even comes with the PCM channel that you can make sound crappy like it would back in the day with some games. I instantly fell in love with this plugin.

They even went out of their way to create a VGM player that you can rip FM patches and samples from. It makes studying, learning, and just using this stuff SO much easier for newcomers (before this, you'd have to go out of your way to search for an outdated program to rip patches from just a song, then see which one you actually want by repeatedly loading in stuff, and then rename it. That was cumbersome).
