Description

Never intended to be a mass produced product, the original RAT pedals were built completely by hand, enclosed in an off-the-shelf project box. All of the holes were hand drilled and were finished in a black crinkle coating with a bright florescent silk-screened logo. Only twelve of these pedals were built, one prototype and eleven production models.

Features and functionality

  • Tomsline Black Teeth's distortion knob has limited range, reaching high gain quickly at 9:00, with Turbo mode offering more volume/headroom than the vintage setting.

What Makes the Pro Co RAT So Great? - InSync

sweetwater.com

The Pro Co “Bud Box” RAT is a legendary distortion pedal that has stood the test of time, offering a versatile range of tones from gritty overdrive to creamy fuzz. Its unique op-amp design provides a rich harmonic distortion, making it a favorite among iconic guitarists. However, there are mixed opinions regarding the tonal differences between vintage and modern iterations, with some players arguing that newer models lack the warmth of their predecessors. The RAT’s unconventional filter knob can also confuse users accustomed to traditional tone controls. Still, for those seeking a distinctive and expressive sound, the RAT remains an invaluable addition to any pedalboard.

From Jeff Beck and Joe Perry to Kurt Cobain and Thurston Moore, the Flexible ProCo Rat Has Star Appeal and Staying Power | GuitarPlayer

guitarplayer.com

The Pro Co "Bud Box" The Rat is a legendary distortion pedal that has earned its place in rock history with its versatile tonal palette, ranging from crunchy overdrive to fuzz-like chaos. Its ability to deliver thick, saturated tones reminiscent of cranked tube amps makes it a must-try for guitarists seeking both power and nuance. However, some players may find its raw character demanding when finely dialing in tones, especially at higher gain settings. Despite this, the Rat's rich heritage and wide adoption by icons like Kurt Cobain and Jeff Beck solidify its status as a staple in numerous setups. If you're after a pedal with star power and a storied legacy, the Rat is a compelling choice, though some may prefer a more polished sound.

I got it from one of the founding members of ProCo. He mentioned this may be the first prototype but is not 100% positive of that. This pedal is one of 12 originally made before the Rat went into production. I've never seen one before in person just old stock photos so I'm not sure how many are left. The guy mentioned a few went to Joe Walsh and possibly Jeff Beck.
