PROS

  • 3-band EQ is responsive, allowing for precise tone shaping

  • Aggression switch offers versatile gain levels for different metal tones

  • High-quality sound replicates expensive amp distortion (like a 5150-style amp)

  • Can also function well as a preamp, freeing up DSP on multi-effects units

  • Sturdy, lightweight, and easily fits onto pedalboards

  • Works well with various amps, enhancing clean channels with tube-like distortion

  • Offers a wide range of distortion, from light overdrive to heavy gain

  • Tone controls are precise, facilitating a broad spectrum of distortion sounds

  • Design and build quality are praised; solid knobs and switch

CONS

  • Requires a noise gate due to noticeable hiss and feedback at high volumes

  • Some users report it sounds thin and lacks punch in the low end at high gain settings

  • The pedal can slide and scratch easily, suggesting a need for a protective case or rubber bottom

  • A few users found the pedal overhyped compared to expectations

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Revv G3.

Features and functionality

  • Owners highlight the G3's exceptional noise control, with very little floor noise even at high gain levels.

    Source
  • The original G3 is described as having a focused high gain tone, cleaning up well with dynamics, but its EQ is considered dark and boxy without additional tweaks.

    Source
  • Owners note the G3's high cut/lpf effectively reduces fizz but lacks a way to add "air," leading to a boxy tone.

    Source
  • The Revv G3 is noted for its tightness and note definition, maintaining clarity without sounding overly compressed or artificial.

    Source
  • The G3's bass knob, if overused, can overwhelm the low end, requiring careful adjustment.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • The G3 is perceived as expensive, but deals can be found, such as a used G3 for 160 euros, which is considered a good value by some buyers.

    Source

User experience

  • Some owners suggest the G3 V2 circuit fixes presence issues found in the original, making it more suitable for those who prefer a compact setup without additional EQ or boost pedals.

    Source
  • Owners who have tried both setups suggest the G3 sounds amazing both as a preamp and in front of an amp as a distortion/overdrive.

    Source
  • Users with bright, clean amps report the G3 sounds poor in front but excels when plugged into the FX loop return.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Users with dark-voiced amps like an Orange Rockerverb or Plexi clone may find the original G3 suitable when paired with an EQ pedal to brighten the tone.

    Source
  • The G3 is praised for its natural transition when switching from an overdrive setup, providing a seamless and authentic sound.

    Source
  • The pedal is noted to work well with high-output pickups and extended range guitars, fitting genres like tech death metal.

    Source
  • The G3 shines as a preamp when connected to an FX loop, bypassing the amp's preamp section for a clearer, uncolored sound.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The G3 V2 is noted to lack the aggressive tone of the original G3 when the gain is set before 9 o'clock but offers a more open tone with higher gain settings.

    Source
  • The G3 is compared favorably to the BE-OD, with some users finding it offers more potential gain while maintaining clarity.

    Source
  • Some users find the G3 dry and boxy compared to the Metal Muff or Mooer Brown Sound preamp, which offer brighter tones.

    Source
  • The Revv G3 is compared to the Solar Chug, with some users preferring the latter for its sound profile.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Powering the G3 at 18V is suggested for added headroom and clearer distortion.

Revv G3 Review - Premier Guitar

premierguitar.com

The Revv G3 Pedal delivers a blistering, high-gain experience that rock and metal enthusiasts will adore. With its intuitive design and formidable "aggression" switch, it offers a plethora of distortion levels without sacrificing note clarity. The pedal shines with its vibrant lead tones and dynamic response, making it versatile for various playing styles. However, even with the gain off, the pedal maintains a level of dirt that might not suit those seeking a cleaner boost. Its design and build reflect Revv's reputation for quality, ensuring it stands out in any guitarist's rig. Despite its minor limitations, the G3 is a powerhouse for those craving thick, articulate high-gain sounds.

Revv Amplification G3 Distortion Pedal Review

guitar.com

The Revv G3 Pedal is a Canadian powerhouse, delivering a robust selection of hard rock and metal tones with a top-notch build. Inspired by Revv's revered amplifiers, it excels in clarity and aggression, handling varied guitar types seamlessly. The intuitive controls and responsive EQ make it versatile, while the Aggression switch unveils distinct distortion characters, from a throaty roar to an exhilarating metal sound. However, even at its cleanest, it leans towards a 'hairy' tone. Overall, it's a compelling choice for those seeking a high-quality, heavy-sound pedal.

i love it but dont match me

it works well with my lespaul but im not a hunbcker fan. I use fender more and obviously this high gain metal pedal wasn't designed for singlecoil

kitcarson

Insane.

Forget your amps distortion. This little amp in a box will turn your clean channel into death and destruction with one click.

The knobs are extremely responsive, the tone is excellent, and the pedal is simple and easy to use.

Not saying this is the only distortion pedal I’ll ever use, but this pedal has spoiled me. I’ll be extremely picky next time I’m shopping for some dirt & grime.

Preferred Settings + Usage:

Red setting all the way. I have extremely hot pickups so I like to keep the gain knob down and let the guitar do the work there.

Blown Away

The G3 was my first piece of gear from Revv. When i first plugged in i couldn't believe what i was hearing. This pedal is simply amazing! Its a tube amp in a box and does it well. The aggression switch bumps up or lowers your gain and some bass frequencies and the EQ has a huge range. This is a must have pedal as online demos do it no justice!

stachex87

Build Quality is amazing

Hands down the best distortion pedal I've ever owned. You can completely dial in tones that range from almost a fuzz sounding distortion to complete gain heavy death metal tones. This pedal is going to remain on the board for good. I purchased the "Shocking Red" edition just because the color is very 80s metal, and who wouldn't love that?

Amp in a box

Wow. Great overdrive and distortion tones are stored in this wonderful pedal. It covers a lot of ground and has to be heard in person. Online demos just don't do this pedal any justice. The aggression switch is a very cool feature and the tone knobs have a wide, very usable, and musical range.

OMG

It has so unbelieveably much gain ... but it is cool!
