Solid mixer for a very low price

In use

Jamming and recording with a friend the other day it struck me how well the functionality of this mixer is chosen. It is very flexible, yet simple to use and quite compact.

I have the direct outs of the GB2R 16 going into my 16 channel audio interface. (EVO16 + Focusrite OctoPre). We were plugging guitars, mic's, groove boxes and synths straight into the mixer and recording them on separate tracks in Ableton Live.

I have my monitors hooked up to the Monitor outs instead of the Main mix. This allowed us to control levels for headphones and speakers independently so switching between monitoring with headphones or speakers while recording was easy.

The 4 band EQ with 2 mid sweeps worked great on all sources, so we recorded the signal post EQ/post fader. But with a simple flick of a switch on individual channels we could have switched recording pre EQ and pre fader. Very nice.

The 2 of the 6 auxes were used for effects.

So we had 4 auxes left that could have been used as recording busses (when you have a 2 or 4 channel audio interface), or for 2 stereo headphone mixes while tracking.

Why I choose the GB2R 16

I was looking for a small mixer with direct outputs so I could record my synth, samplers and drummachines onto separate tracks into Ableton Live, while also allowing me to make music with the computer turned off. I wanted at least 16 channels with direct outs and it should also be compact.

Except for the Soundcraft GB2R16 I also considered the Mackie VLZ 1604 and the Allen and Heath MixWizard 16:2. I choose the Soundcraft because there are direct outputs on all 16 channels ( only 8 on the Mackie ) and because the Direct Outputs are switchable to post fader ( in the A&H this is done with internal jumpers ).

A modern equivalent from Souncraft only exists in the FX16ii which is an update from the 1997 Soundcraft Spirit FX16. It's 800, - euro's new, but it goes for about the same price as the GB2R used (450, - euro's).

On the downside the Spirit FX16 only has a 3 band EQ and 4 auxes. It does however have a Lexicon Effects engine built-in and it also has the 16 direct outputs switchable pre EQ or post fader.

Great Mixer, pro features.

This mixer is the hub of my studio, it has 16 mono channels with line/mic inputs, inserts per channel and direct outs that can easily be switched to pre or post fader. The eq's are musical, the preamps sound nice (they're not API but are certainly useable). 6 Aux sends are great for effects routing or for creating monitor mixes in a live environment. Pro features in a relatively small package, Mine is rack mounted and is patched one to one on the direct outs to 16 inputs on my audio interface, works like a charm.

It's about half the price ( 800, - euro's new ) , but it only has a 3 band EQ and 4 auxes.

It does have 16 direct outputs switchable pre EQ or post fader, like the GB2R.

There is a Lexicon Effects engine built-in, which the GB2R does not have.
