Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about TASCAM DP-008EX 8-track Digital Portastudio.

Build quality

  • The Tascam DP-008EX's stop button is notably clicky, requiring post-recording edits to remove the sound.

    Source
  • It's noted that the EQ settings on the Tascam DP-008EX are buried in menus, making them less accessible during quick recording sessions.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The DP-008EX lacks MIDI sync but includes compressors and EQ options for both pre and post-processing.

    Source
  • The device allows track bouncing to expand beyond the initial eight tracks, though it's not the most efficient method.

    Source
  • The DP-008EX can operate on batteries, but users note it depletes them rapidly, suggesting purchasing the power supply for extended use.

    Source
  • To record more than two tracks simultaneously, an external mixer is necessary as the DP-008EX does not support multi-track simultaneous recording like the Zoom R16.

    Source
  • The Tascam DP-008EX may apply a built-in limiter automatically, potentially enhancing the perceived loudness and depth of the recordings.

    Source
  • Owners report that the Tascam's export master sounds "bigger" and "thicker" with minimal onboard EQ, possibly due to intrinsic sound processing not detailed in the manual.

    Source
  • Comparisons with DAW exports suggest the DP-008EX's raw output maintains a weightier sound, even with basic EQ applied only in the DAW.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners have reported the onboard mics are adequate for quick idea sketches but not optimal for high-quality recordings.

    Source
  • Users appreciate the Tascam DP-008EX for its portability and ease of use, making it ideal for recording away from a computer.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Ideal for mobile setups, the DP-008EX can mix down tracks internally, useful for travel situations with minimal equipment.

    Source
  • The DP-008EX is praised for capturing a "sludgy" sound akin to Neurosis or Godflesh, suggesting it's well-suited for heavy, textured music genres.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The DP-008EX records in 16-bit, whereas the Zoom R16 offers 24-bit recording, providing higher resolution audio quality.

Critic Reviews

Tascam DP-006 & DP-008EX Review - MusicTech

musictech.com

The TASCAM DP-008EX is an intuitive, portable 8-track recorder lauded for its ease of use and sound quality, making it a solid choice for on-the-go musicians. Its battery efficiency and useful effects section add to its appeal. However, the slow export function can be frustrating for those wanting to quickly transfer their work to a computer. Despite some limitations, such as dynamics processing only on inputs, it remains a viable option for singer-songwriters seeking mobility without compromising on functionality.

Compact and Useful

I use this regularly to sketch ideas in the field. I’ve bought several and give them as gifts. My only complaint/wish is that it had MIDI - it’s got tempo control and MIDI would make it easier to sync with my synths, drum machines, and sequencers so I wouldn’t have to work as hard lining things up later in my DAW.

B

Perfect

This little 8 track recorder is perfect. I'll keep mine forever and ever.
