Tascam FW1884

soundonsound.com

Tascam's FW-1884 is a robust all-in-one solution for musicians seeking a blend of control surface, audio, and MIDI interface. Its motorized faders and compatibility with key DAWs offer a tactile, mixer-like experience. Pros include impressive I/O capabilities, strong mic preamps, and versatile MIDI ports. However, the lack of positional displays on encoders and limited software synth control may deter some users. Despite minor drawbacks, it remains an attractive, comprehensive tool, especially for those not needing extensive real-time parameter manipulation. An excellent choice if a one-box setup fits your workflow.

Versatile and built like a tank

This enormous piece of home studio has 8 mic preamps, full sized motorised faders, midi in/out, FireWire and optical input. Faders can be switched through 4 banks. Biggest drawback is Tascam stopped supporting it and there are no 64 bit drivers for Mac. (For Windoze there are.) So I use an old laptop. Who cares? It's about the music, maaaan!

oh wow, I had one of these on loan for awhile for location gigs and forgot all about it... definitely a PC gadget even though firewire is such a mac thing

How I wished this would get just a little more support...

GREAT control surface. Well thought and designed, things are where you expect them to be.

BUT DO NOT BUY: this is firewire-based, and lost support years ago making them a huge door stopper now.
