Description

The MPEQ-1 Microphone Preamp/EQ/DI by Undertone Audio

The UnderTone Audio MPEQ-1 is a high-end analog channel strip that integrates a mic preamp, parametric equalizer, and instrument DI (direct input) into a single 19" 1-U rack unit.
It was designed by UnderTone Audio to give engineers flexible, musical sound shaping with Class-A discrete circuitry and transformer options for both colored and transparent responses.
You can use the mic preamp and EQ together as a channel strip, or separately depending on how you route your signals.
You can route signals to use the EQ independently via “SEP” mode (separate mic pre and EQ usage).
Front-panel combo jack (XLR + 1/4") serves as the instrument DI input.
When a 1/4" cable is plugged in, both mic inputs are disabled and the unit functions as a DI.

Specs:

• Designed for sonic flexibility while still being intuitive to dial in.
• Mic gain range: –10 dB up to –60 dB in stepped 5 dB increments.
• 20 dB pad: switchable attenuation before the mic pre for hot sources.
• Phase reverse: useful for phase alignment in multi-mic setups.
• 48 V phantom power for condenser mics.
• Class-A discrete design with custom input and output transformers optimized for smooth, musical tone.
• Fully parametric equalizer section with multiple bands and variable Q/shape allows shaping of frequencies with precision.
• Bypass-able transformers: choose between transformer-less clarity and transformer-rich vintage character for both input and output.

REVIEW: Undertone Audio MPEQ-1 — Brian Dane Hansen

briandanehansen.com

The Undertone Audio MPEQ-1 shines as a powerhouse of tonal flexibility, impressing with its robust build quality reminiscent of vintage Neve units. It excels across various applications—from adding depth to drum recordings to enhancing bass and guitar tracks with rich harmonic content. Its EQ flexibility is particularly highlighted, allowing precise control over sound shaping. While its versatility stands out, the unit's complexity might be overwhelming for beginners. However, for those seeking a channel strip capable of transforming any recording into a polished masterpiece, the MPEQ-1 is unparalleled.

Being Able To See The Curves Of An Outboard EQ Using A Frequency Analyser Helps You To Learn Its Characteristics Fast - We Test The Performance Of UnderToneAudio's MPEQ-1 | Production Expert

The MPEQ-1 is a true gem for analog enthusiasts, offering an impressive range of tonal possibilities and vintage charm. Its standout feature is the ability to mimic classic EQ units like the API 550 and Neve 1073, making it a versatile addition to any studio. However, the dual concentric pots might frustrate those with a heavy hand, as they require careful adjustment. The lack of labeling on upper pots is mitigated by a helpful cheat sheet, ensuring users can quickly master the controls. Despite minor handling issues, the MPEQ-1's musicality and comprehensive manual make it a must-try for EQ aficionados.
