Features and functionality

  • Vocaloid5 offers unmatched customization with numerous parameters, attack and release modifiers, vibrato modes, and postprocessing effects, ideal for detailed sound tweaking.

    Source
  • Vocaloid5's "Velocity" parameter could benefit from a rework similar to CeVIO's "Timing" controls for improved usability and precision.

    Source
  • Some users criticize the pre-recorded phrases in Vocaloid5 as catering to beginners, potentially compromising the unique creative potential traditionally associated with Vocaloid software.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Users find pitch bends easier in SynthV due to direct piano roll drawing, while Vocaloid5 requires adjusting parameters, making SynthV preferable for precise control.

    Source
  • Users compare Vocaloid5's Amy voice bank unfavorably to SynthV's Eleanor, noting Eleanor's superior performance and expressiveness.

Value and pricing

  • Vocaloid6's main addition is AI voice bank support, which users feel doesn't justify the upgrade cost compared to Vocaloid5.

    Source
  • Vocaloid5 is only available secondhand as it's no longer sold new after Vocaloid6's release.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Vocaloid5 seems targeted at mainstream EDM producers, but some argue this market doesn't align with the software's full creative potential.

    Source

Vocaloid 5 Review - Bedroom Producers Blog

bedroomproducersblog.com

Yamaha's Vocaloid 5 breathes new life into vocal synthesis, delivering a more expressive and human-like performance than its predecessors. Improved vibrato control and dynamic expression are standout features, allowing for soulful interpretations. However, the software still feels somewhat cumbersome compared to traditional synthesizers, and some beloved features from earlier versions, like cross-synthesis, have vanished. Additionally, breath sounds can be overly dramatic. While it won't replace human singers anytime soon, Vocaloid 5 is a powerful tool for creators looking to explore new vocal textures and ideas.

Vocaloid 5 Review: Virtual Singers in Your DAW - Produce Like A Pro

producelikeapro.com

Vocaloid 5 is a fascinating concept, offering musicians a unique way to synthesize vocals by typing in lyrics and melodies. However, its execution leaves much to be desired; the software struggles to convincingly replicate the nuances of human singing, often sounding unnatural. While it has found a niche audience in Japan, its impact on Western music remains limited, primarily due to its awkward vocal qualities. Vocaloid 5 is an impressive tool for creating virtual singers, but for those seeking realistic vocal performances, it falls short of expectations.

Review: Vocaloid 5

magneticmag.com

Vocaloid 5 is a game-changer in singing voice synthesis, offering remarkable customization and ease of use. With its wealth of voicebanks and thousands of presets, it empowers users to create intricate vocal performances. The interface is intuitive, making it accessible even for newcomers. However, while the product is praised for its affordability and extensive features, some may find the learning curve for advanced editing a bit steep. Overall, it's a powerful tool for musicians looking to explore virtual vocals, though it might not be perfect for every user.

VOCAOID5… VOCAOID5… Where to begin?

I guess I can start with "Oof". I wish I could give this program a 5 star rating, I really do. I love VOCALOID, it is my favorite thing in the world (and I may or may not have a problem but that ain't what this's about). The main problem with VOCALOID5 is that it's buggy. It's release was sudden and YAMAHA clearly didn't iron out the bugs and kinks before release. The original version of the software had a bug where it would crash upon exporting a WAV file. Sometimes you could get one render out of it but it was quite rare for that to happen. Later updates fixed one problem but introduced another in the possess. Another notable bug that was introduced was that the program would crash when you would drag drawn parameters. Then ver 5.2.0 introduced what has been my biggest problem with V5. Upon opening a VPR file (which is the successor to the previous VSQx), and if your computer had little hard drive space, or your computer's memory was low, the program will crash. The only way I've ever been able to get around this glitch is by closing all other programs, and deleting A TON of files off of my computer. So far, the latest update did not fix this issue. It saddens me to say this but I would not recommend V5. It's a real shame since there are quite a few great vocals for the software. I love the starter vocals which are included with the software (especially Amy), VY2 got their long awaited update, and Haruno Sora and the MEIKA twins were released by third party companies and they're all great. However, if you do have CUBASE, it does come with the VOCALOID4.5 Editor for CUBASE (which is basically the V4 Editor for CUBASE updated to support V5 vocals) and you can use that instead. Not to mention that unlike the V5 Editor, V4.5 for CUBASE allows you to use imported VOCALOID2 vocals which is an added bonus.
