CONS

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about dbx 166XL.

Comparisons

  • The 166XL is often preferred over the 266xs for vocal applications due to its more robust compressor circuit, similar to the 1066 and 1064 models.

    Source
  • The DBX 266xs was designed as a more budget-friendly option, potentially compromising on the build quality compared to the 166XL.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The 166XL's peak limiter acts as a clipper and has a slower, sometimes erratic attack, which can affect the initial transients in vocal tracks.

    Source
  • It's noted that the 166XL can truncate some high end and roll off low end while adding noise, affecting its use in high-fidelity applications.

    Source
  • The unit can be used creatively by unlinking L/R channels and feeding the L output into the R input to stack compression, especially useful for bass or loud vocals.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Despite some criticism, the 266xs can be seen as preferable for rap vocals by some users due to its specific tonal characteristics.

    Source
  • The 166XL is often used as a snare compressor due to its built-in gate, making it ideal for handling snare mics effectively.

    Source
  • The 166XL is integral to certain drum sounds, indicating its versatility in handling different elements within a drum kit setup.

    Source
  • The 166XL is recommended for adding warmth to kicks and bass without muddying the mix, making it a preferred choice for analog signal processing.

    Source

User experience

  • Some users find that the 166XL allows more control over the "DBX sound," which is characterized by a noticeable compression effect that can be desirable in certain genres.

    Source
  • Some users find the 166XL adequate but not particularly special, often picking it up for additional compression channels when found at a low price.

    Source
  • Owners describe the 166XL's "vintage warmth" as a result of its tendency to roll off high frequencies, offering a unique analog warmth not present in digital plugins.

    Source

Build quality

  • Some users report mechanical issues like scratchy pots and bypass/stereo-couple switches that short in and out, highlighting areas to check carefully when purchasing used.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • To test functionality, it's recommended to use a VU meter for input/output comparison and to test both gate and compressor sections in coupled and uncoupled modes.

It's kinda crap, but cheap and has a use

I need to revise my review - I had said it was almost useless, but it's actually been pretty useful for quite a few things where stereo compression is needed that's not something up front in the mix - I use it on backup vocals quite often. It does darken things slightly which is fine when used right.

The limiter section is still useless unless you want to use it as a crappy sounding distortion box. It was $50

What the alesis 3630/32 tried to be

not quite hat you get with a 160a but there's 2 of them. Suitable for drums, can be used for kick if you don't have a 160a... do not use the limiter .

pkennethk

why is the limiter trash?

jimmarchi1

because it doesn't sound good, nor does it sound bad enough to be awesome like some units.... if you wat limiting diode bridge is pretty great and PWM is the gold standard and you can get a very good PWM limiter from ART for 170 bucks new thats like a cleaner MXR PWM limiter (long discontinued).... ART, Proco and whirlwind were all founded by guys who started their careers at MXR by the way
