Critic Reviews

Alesis MMT-8 MIDI Recorder (SOS Jan 88)

muzines.co.uk

The Alesis MMT-8 MIDI Recorder punches above its weight as a hardware sequencer, offering a tangible alternative to floppy disk-based options. With its ability to hold 16 MIDI channels per track, it defies its seemingly limited track number. The interface is intuitive, mimicking a multitrack tape recorder, making it user-friendly. However, it lacks certain features like tempo change programming and mid-part recording abilities, which could be limiting for some users. Despite these shortcomings, its competitive pricing and ease of use make it a worthy contender in the world of sequencers, particularly for those who prefer hardware over software.

the MMT was the be all end all for decades

This was the easiest to use, most powerful loop sequencer on the planet and the used prices continue to be great. Loading up a song was time consuming but not as bad as an old sampler LOL Rock solid timing. All in all an excellent piece with a great itnerface. Just stellar. Overly large and ehavy even for the time but way cheaper than similar roland gear of its days.

A sequencer so nice, I use it twice!

The Alesis MMT-8 (well, two of them, actually) have been at the heart of my live setup since 1998. Sure, they look like an 80s office calculator or fax machine, but they are legendary in the hardware sequencer community for a reason - hands on, easy to edit, and fun to use. They do have their limitations, but they get the job done in spades.
