Solid and Feature Rich
Being a Linux-based musician, it's really important to get an interface which is standards compliant and is recognised by Linux out of the box. I don't want to do any dances with software compiling, emulating another operating system, or partially-functional drivers. Hiding the audio routing table behind some proprietary software is such a dick move, and really isn't necessary.
The Rubix44, however, absolutely delivers. Rock solid performance, low latency, low noise, and all four inputs are visible to JACK just by plugging in. No software needs to be compiled, no drivers installed, and all controls are physically present on the unit itself.
I wanted to upgrade to the Rubix44 from a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 2nd gen to add more flexibility to my recording setup, particularly as I move towards a full stereo rig. Having four inputs was definitely the most appealing feature, but being able to enable phantom power for only two inputs at a time really suits my recording setup. Now I can blend powered and passive microphones without worrying about damaging anything.
While the comp/limiter functionality is a little opaque in how it works, it cannot be faulted for quality or performance. Nor can you argue that it's a feature usually absent from preamps in this price bracket, so even if it was mediocre it would be a useful addition. But it's not mediocre, it's absolutely fantastic.
Some of the switches are a little awkwardly placed at the rear of the unit - most particular of these is the unit's power switch - but that's a pretty minor gripe when everything else is so spot on.
Roland have produced a real gem of an interface here. I cannot fault its performance on any level.
