Build quality

  • Many find the footswitch wiring difficult, suggesting wiring it outside the enclosure for easier assembly and troubleshooting.

    Source
  • Cold solder joints are often dull gray and can cause loose connections; reheating them without adding solder is usually sufficient to improve the connection.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Users recommend reflowing solder joints if experiencing noise or cutouts, with a focus on the footswitch and jack connections.

    Source
  • A hotter soldering iron setting, around 700-720°F, with a fine tip is recommended for better soldering results and avoiding cold joints.

    Source
  • Mistaken diode orientation can impact the circuit, indicating the importance of verifying diode placement against the instructions.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The BYOC Mouse is recognized for its diode switch feature, allowing users to explore different clipping styles.

    Source
  • The BYOC Mouse offers three clipping circuits: original lm308 Rat, LED Turbo Rat, and a germanium fuzz, each providing distinct tonal characteristics.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • High-quality solder like Kester “44” 63/37 0.031" is suggested to improve build quality and solder flow.

    Source

User experience

  • Some builders experience issues with noise and signal cutouts, often resolved by addressing solder joint quality and wiring mistakes.

    Source
  • The germanium fuzz circuit experiences a notable volume drop and low-end loss compared to the other circuits, yet creates unique velcro-like tones.

    Source
  • Despite initial concerns about complexity, first-time builders found the assembly process akin to building with Legos, thanks to clear instructions.

    Source
  • Owners highlight the emotional connection to the build process, especially when the project is linked to personal experiences or memories.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Combining the fuzz circuit with a Green Muff pedal can produce broken, glitchy, synth-like tones, expanding creative sound possibilities.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The lm308 circuit is described as less gritty, more gated, and fat, suitable for vintage and lo-fi tones.
