Features and functionality

  • The color-coded system allows instant recognition of pick thickness, making it easy to replace or borrow the exact type needed without confusion.

    Source
  • The "tortoise" logo side provides a textured grip, with most users preferring this side against their thumb for better handling.

    Source
  • Some players prefer the "blunt edge" of the 1.0mm Tortex for rhythm, finding it easier to switch between strumming and picking without changing picks.

    Source

User experience

  • The initial powdery grip is widely appreciated for its friction, but some users switch picks once this finish wears off.

    Source
  • Many players have used the same Tortex pick for years, finding them durable and reliable, although they frequently disappear rather than wear out.

    Source
  • Some users intentionally etch marks into the pick face to enhance grip, improving its performance for varied playing styles.

    Source
  • The logo on these picks can wear off with use, which some users initially mistake for counterfeit issues.

    Source

    Source
  • Users report that thicker picks like the 1.5mm Dunlop Flow reduce slipping compared to Tortex, a key concern for technical metal players who require firm grip and control.

    Source

Build quality

  • Tortex picks are praised for their durability, with many users noting they rarely break and instead might develop a slight curve over time.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Tortex picks are noted to provide a more rounded, softer tone compared to nylon picks, which offer a sharper sound.

    Source
  • Users often compare Tortex picks with Jazz III, noting Tortex's bright and snappy sound, though some find Jazz III's grip superior.

    Source
  • The Dunlop Flow series is highlighted as a compromise for those seeking a balance between the Tortex's feel and Jazz III's precision, especially in faster, technical styles.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Players find the 0.88mm pick ideal for balanced functionality, suitable for both lead and rhythm, especially in rock styles like AC/DC.

    Source
  • For heavy music styles, players often switch to 1.14mm picks for a more robust attack, while lighter picks are favored for general use.

Best all-rounder... In black

Can't go wrong with these no matter the style you play. I like their mellower attack and reduced string noise compared to Ultex (especially on the wound strings) and I also prefer their texture which to me resembles more that of the fingernail. They sound great of the bat but I like to polish them on the edges and tip to have more of that clear and natural delrin tone with faster and smoother release. I tried the 0.88 and 1.14, to me the 1.0 hits the sweet spot of articulation and snap. The size and shape is also perfect for my fingers, the top of the pick just fits super nice on my index phalange giving it a very ergonomic grip. Available everywhere dirt cheap and consistent quality. Perfect all-rounder pick. The blue one - like any other pick - vanishes out of existence once it falls off your hand, so might as well just have them in black, scientists say it retains heat better :p

A Great Plectrum

These are the same as the Dunlop Tortex Standard picks, but in black with silver logo.

The much loved Jim Dunlop Tortex plectrums are used by millions of guitarists around the world.

These plectrums are great for speed playing, strumming and thumping, palm-muted riffs.
