Description
This was one of the earliest tape delay processors for the guitar – better known as an echo effect – released by Fender in 1958. Although it was built into a tweed-covered carrying case to match the Fender amplifiers of the time, the EccoFonic was actually a product sourced outside the company. In fact, in 1959, the designers of the device decided to build and market it themselves. However, the company did not fully understand the music business and the EccoFonic was short-lived. Fender introduced its own internally designed tape echo in 1963, which it named the Electronic Echo Chamber.

In a video on the 501chorusecho YouTube channel, titled "Homeskoolin’ Bonus 'Tape Echo Madness Madness Madness Madness Madness....'," Tom Bukovac discusses the Ecco-Fonic tape delay at approximately the 4:53 mark. This video serves as a preview for the full demo titled 'Inside Blackbird with Tom on delays/echo devices,' where Bukovac explores various echo devices.
According to an article by Michael Dregni in Vintage Guitar magazine, Juan Adomono, also known as John Adomono, used the Ecco-Fonic tape delay. The article notes, "Adomono’s secret weapon was the Ecco-Fonic, a cutting-edge tape-echo machine. Alongside DeArmond’s Tremolo Control, it was one of the first stand-alone effects for the guitar. The Ecco-Fonic was also a testy, fidgety machine to use. It was never produced in great numbers, embraced by guitarists, nor widely distributed. Yet it remains a guitar milestone. And Adomono was one of the early testers, promoters, and endorsers."
