Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Electro-Harmonix Pulsar.

Features and functionality

  • The Pulsar is noted for its unique shape knob, allowing users to adjust the symmetry of the tremolo effect, a rare feature among big brand tremolo pedals.

    Source
  • The Pulsar can produce ring modulation-like effects, showcasing its versatility beyond typical tremolo sounds.

    Source
  • The shape control allows for reverse-like sound effects when combined with specific depth and rate adjustments.

    Source
  • The Nano Pulsar includes a volume control, allowing users to compensate for tremolo-induced volume drops, unlike older Pulsar versions.

    Source
  • The stereo ping pong effect in the Pulsar can be intense, with the left volume dropping as the right peaks, especially when hard panned.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Some users prefer the Boss TR-2 over the Pulsar due to its perceived cleaner sound and lack of volume drop issues, despite the Pulsar's additional stereo capability.

    Source
  • Users find the Pulsar's shape control offers more shaping options compared to the TR-2, with the ability to morph symmetry between various waveforms.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners appreciate the Pulsar's ability to mimic late 60's Bandmaster sounds, although some find the depth control inconsistent past the 1:00 position.

    Source
  • The foot switch on the Pulsar is reported to "pop" loudly when engaged, though not all users find this to be a significant issue.

    Source
  • Owners report that the usable range of the rate knob is limited, occupying only a small portion of the overall sweep.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The stereo option is highlighted for enhancing setups with clean Orange and Marshall amps, offering an engaging panning effect not found in many tremolos.

    Source
  • A momentary mode, in addition to the latching switch, is suggested to enhance the pedal's functionality.

    Source
  • When paired with fuzz, the Pulsar's stereo depth control creates a striking effect, with volume waves dynamically moving across the stereo field.

    Source
  • The Pulsar serves as a stereo splitter in pedalboards, eliminating the need for additional splitters in setups transitioning from mono to stereo.

    Source

Build quality

  • Some users find the pedal's enclosure too large for their setups, suggesting a smaller design would be beneficial.

A another EHX musthave

From a subtle tremolo to a choppy wave and everything in between... Perfect when I'm playing on amps without tremolo.

Preferred Settings + Usage:

It depends what I need, but I mainly use it in square wave mode with the fuzz

what can you say about EHX

the original pulsar dishes up 2 righteous modes of trem.... it gives you a wide range from fender swampiness to supro choppiness. This suffers from the same housing issue as lot of the alrger EHX pedals the thing gauge metal of the box tends to bend under repeated stompings and you slowly wear the switch out. I really don't know why they couldn't have ut this epdal in a smaller enclosure like the small stone. I guess its not that important since I don't use trem much and I tend to gravitate to the cheap little dano fish n chips!
