Electronic Music Studios (EMS) Polysynthi | Vintage Synth Explorer

vintagesynth.com

The EMS Polysynthi is a rare vintage gem that never quite achieved commercial success, yet it holds a unique appeal for synth enthusiasts. While its para-phonic capabilities and innovative features like the voltage-controlled analog delay line offer intriguing possibilities, it falls short of the polyphonic powerhouses like the Roland Juno 6 or Sequential Prophet 5. Its complex control panel and dated delay effects might not impress those seeking pristine sound quality. However, for those drawn to vintage charm and experimental sound design, the Polysynthi's quirks might just be its allure.

A Rare EMS Polysynthi | Fess' Find | Reverb News

reverb.com

The EMS Polysynthi is a rare gem from 1978, with unique features like analog filtering and effects processing that stand out in its paraphonic design. Its analog delay line allows for diverse effects, but the control panel isn't as user-friendly compared to its contemporaries. While it captivated bands like Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk, its commercial failure and limited production make it more of a collector's piece than a practical purchase. The hefty price and local pickup requirement suggest it's for serious buyers only, leaving potential users questioning its value against more accessible options like the Yamaha CS-80.

You’ve mentioned in the album biog that only the synth mentioned in the title was used on its corresponding track. But with the EMS VCS3 one, you used the delay section of an EMS Polysynthi. Vince Clarke declared the Polysynthi “the worst sounding synth ever made”. Now I’m no expert but I’ve tried using one and I think it sounds horrible… what’s your take on it?
