"During the time in which Ultravox was led by John Foxx, he used a Guild B-301, a white Gibson EB-3 and fretless Fender Precision basses, and an EMS Synthi AKS and later Mini Moog synthesisers with an Ampeg amplifier with 8×10" speaker cabinets.
While the recording of Vienna album, he used a Yamaha bass, a Fender Precision bass, a Mini Moog synthesiser and Yamaha synthesiser
Later he also used Status and Steinberger basses.
Cross's distinctive grey bass is an Ibanez RoadStar from the early 1980s; this bass has been used on many of Ultravox's albums and was Cross' primary instrument during the first stage of the 'Return to Eden' Tour in 2009.
On the 'Return to Eden' tour in 2010 and the 'Brilliant' tour in 2012, he also used a Rickenbacker 4003 Fireglo finish bass and a standby black Fender Telecaster Bass."
Mike Ratledge is known to have used the EMS Synthi AKS in numerous recordings, including some as early as 1970. This is evidenced by a photo showing the Synthi AKS positioned on the left, between his Lowrey Organ and Fender Rhodes.
These are the list of synthesizers that the Radiophonic Workshop used in 1985
In a 2018 interview with Fact Magazine, Sarah Davachi confirmed her use of the EMS Synthi AKS synthesizer, stating: "the last couple of years I’ve shifted from modular stuff. I like integrated instruments, like mid-to-late ’70s analog instruments. [...] the main instrument that I use in the studio is the EMS Synthi AKS." This information was provided by John Twells in the article "Sarah Davachi on the beauty of instruments, from analog synthesizers to pipe organs."
From the XLR8R Studio Essentials article:
Donato has a different collection of synthesizers, including some Roland classics and an EMS Synthi AKS.
His only synthesisers are a SCI Prophet 5 and, more interestingly, an EMS Synthi AKS. "I got the Prophet because I'd mucked about on a mates and it was the only one I knew how to work." The AKS he got 7 years ago but minus its keyboard. He finds its external input useful for treating sounds. "Its got a built in VC springline reverb and ring modulator. It's really nasty but good for that element of roughness."
