A slept on classic!

Ensoniq samplers have a certain sound that you can't get anywhere else especially when it comes to sampling from your vinyl collection. Programming on this is a lot of fun and chopping up your samples is actually easy. I also own the ASR-X-Pro as well the ASR-10 Rack and the Mirage, it's all about the sound for me and Ensoniq always delivers what I want...

Nothing sounds like it...

The circuitry of the ASR-X sampling drum machine make audio sounds amazing,once again that's if you into a more Lo-Fi sound, Its great for sampling drum breaks and anything else just running audio through the ASR-X gives audio a great sound to me.

Are you also investing in new equipment?

It’s been a year and a half since we’ve bought anything new! Moreover, I’m rather perplexed by the fact that many machines aren’t manufactured anymore. I see it with samplers, and on that topic, I have advice to give to certain manufacturers. I feel that the specifics of the machines – editing functions, memory capacity… – have taken priority over sound quality. The new products coming out now record thirty or forty minute stereo samples, with a sometimes dramatically changed sound with respect to their predecessors, and this is within the same brand. It’s very annoying! I’m aware that there’s a new market coming with the rise of electronic music, but right now, except for equipment designed for professional studios, still just as refined and engaging, samplers are tending to disappear, replaced by “DJ thingy” samplers [the editor chimes in to add that these are called “dedicated samplers”, lol!], or smaller models at a competitive price, which isn’t necessarily the only solution. Nevertheless, I’ll exclude the Akai models; the developers are designing things the right way – they have shown what they can do. But if you don’t use Akai, I don’t think you really have a choice!

You therefore stay faithful to your old samplers?

Yes, primarily to the Ensoniq ASR-10. I prefer not to mention the ASR-X, which to me doesn’t even sound like the same brand. But I think they’ve had problems… Of course, if it’s more interesting to make the MC-303 and sell truckloads of it, that doesn’t mean they should stop making the S-760, or other good products. Going back to what I buy, I prefer old synthesizers, used machines in general, and interesting components, high-end models. All the machines we were talking about earlier are ideal for messing around at home, but they shouldn’t replace the rest. Anyway, because we need them for the stage, for the studio, and because I’m a little paranoid, I have two or three of every instrument – in case one fails, I can keep going!
