The X-28 Multitracker Cassette Portasudio 4 Track Recorder by Fostex

The Fostex X-28 is a vintage 4-track cassette recorder that was popular among musicians and home studios in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
As part of Fostex’s Portastudio series, the X-28 combines high-quality analog recording with the convenience of cassette tapes, offering an affordable solution for multi-track recording.
The X-28 features a simple yet powerful layout, with 4 discrete tracks for recording, mixing, and overdubbing, making it ideal for demo recordings, small-scale projects, or live recordings.
Its durable design and easy-to-use interface make it a favorite for musicians and DIY recorders who want a hands-on, analog experience.
The Fostex X-28 was part of the Portastudio series, which became a staple for low-budget studios in the analog recording era.
It’s a great choice for musicians who want to create vintage-sounding recordings or experiment with analog workflow, as it offers hands-on control over the recording process.
However, being a cassette-based system, it's important to keep in mind the limitations of tape, such as tape hiss and limited frequency response compared to modern digital systems.

Fostex X28 (MT Feb 92)

muzines.co.uk

The Fostex X-28 Multitracker offers a compact and portable solution for those diving into cassette-based recording. While its logic-controlled transport functions and eight-input mixer make it a solid contender, the slow rewind and forward speeds can test your patience. The standard cassette speed, despite being a surprise, maintains ease of use with less tape to shuffle. Its mixer section, although serviceable, is where cost-cutting is evident, yet it still supports simultaneous four-track recording. The X-28 delivers surprisingly clear recordings, reminiscent of a good-quality reel-to-reel but falters with second-generation bounces. Though lacking built-in MIDI sync, it remains a viable choice for budget setups. The X-28’s durability and serviceability, backed by Fostex's reputation, offer peace of mind, making it a confident purchase despite some limitations.

Fostex X28 (SOS Dec 91)

muzines.co.uk

The Fostex X-28 Multitracker impresses with its compact design and expanded features over its predecessor, the X26, offering improved inputs and electronic tape transport controls. It's particularly appealing for MIDI users due to its remix capabilities and flexibility. However, the lack of channel EQ and minimal input facilities may deter those seeking more comprehensive control over their recordings. The reliance on Dolby B noise reduction rather than the more robust Type C is also a compromise. While the design has some faults, like the oddly placed Dolby switch, the X-28 strikes a decent balance between price and performance for entry-level users.
