GForce Virtual String Machine

soundonsound.com

GForce's Virtual String Machine (VSM) is a nostalgic homage to vintage string machines, offering a meticulously sampled collection of 17 iconic instruments. The VSM shines with its dual-layer structure, simple subtractive synthesis controls, and apt effects like phasing and ensemble for rich soundscapes. While MIDI assignments aren't saved with presets and Sonar users might encounter note-hanging issues, the VSM's charm and sound authenticity outweigh these minor hiccups. Overall, it's a delight for both string synth aficionados and newcomers alike, capturing the essence of classic string machines with modern twists.

GForce Virtual String Machine review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

GForce Virtual String Machine (VSM) offers fantastic sound quality and flexibility with its dual-layer design, making it an excellent tool for emulating classic string synths. Its extensive preset library and easy MIDI integration make it user-friendly and realistically priced. However, its niche appeal may limit its audience, and the lack of user sample import could be a drawback for some. Overall, VSM is a highly adaptable and unmatched option for its purpose, providing a rich array of sounds that go beyond typical ensemble instruments.

John Foxx's comments on the VSM, from the GForce website: "VSM is simply beautiful - detailed, accurate and very useful. All the classic instruments are here and all equally well performed. (Especially delighted to find my old Elka Rhapsody again, as well as the Solina). The lavish layering is simple, if you like it lush as Lynch. All sounds are Accurately Artificial. Supplies all the proper synthetic spectrums of mood, through Delicate to Tingling, Creepy to Powerful. Martian Coctails to Noir Sexmelt. Deeply enjoyed the way the strings decay and attack can be surreally lengthened to create very subtle approaching and retreating horizons. By the way, the phaser is a blinder - still have my vintage MXR and the SM version can shape similar harmonic curves. That cascade interaction between electron strings and phaser has always been absolutely essential. So this is Retro Repro at its best - informed, sensitive, detailed, technologically extended - and best of all - a new, very useful electronic instrument in its own right."
