Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Gibson G-45 Standard.

Features and functionality

  • The G-45's sound hole design aims to provide a player-facing sound experience, but some users find it unnecessary or ineffective in enhancing acoustic performance.

    Source
  • The 2019 G-45 has diamond-shaped fret markers and lacks a bound fretboard, which may contribute to fret sprout susceptibility.

    Source
  • The G-45's C-shaped neck is praised for comfort, making barre chords easier to play compared to full-size dreadnoughts.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • An LR Baggs Lyric pickup is recommended as a replacement for under-saddle piezo pickups, significantly improving tone quality by addressing unwanted string ring.

    Source

Build quality

  • The G-45 includes a real ebony fingerboard and bridge, and the model is made in the US, which some users prefer over Mexican-made alternatives.

    Source
  • Some G-45 models suffer from severe fret sprout, potentially causing discomfort when playing.

    Source
  • Some owners appreciate the walnut grain on the back, but criticize the truss rod cover's walnut pattern on the mahogany neck as visually mismatched.

Comparisons

  • The G-45 does not replicate the iconic J-45 sound, making it less appealing for those specifically seeking that tonal character.

    Source
  • The G-45 was favored over the Martin DX2E and Taylor 214CE for its well-rounded sound and louder projection, with the Martins sounding "thin and plasticky" to some.

Use cases and applications

  • It's noted that the tonal transformation of walnut can lead to a complex, deep, and warm sound over time, enhancing the G-45's appeal for certain sonic preferences.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • The G-45 is sensitive to humidity changes, which can affect playability. Keeping it near a humidifier can help prevent issues like fret sprout.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners appreciate the G-45 for its warm sound and low action, making it favorable for fingerpicking styles.

    Source
  • Some owners have encountered issues like humidity cracks and high frets, but these can be fixed to enhance playability and tone.

    Source
  • The spartan aesthetic with a basic rosette and thin finish is noted as a cost-cutting measure, but the solid-wood construction is valued at the competitive price point.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Despite mixed online reviews, a buyer was delighted with their €1000 purchase, noting the high-quality soft case as a pleasant surprise.

Gibson G-45 Standard Review - Premier Guitar

premierguitar.com

The Gibson G-45 Standard delivers a lively sound and superb playability, showcasing a beautiful design at an accessible price point of $1,299. However, its bright tone may clash with traditionalists hoping for the warm, earthy tones of a J-45, particularly in heavy strumming where the midrange tends to dominate the bass. The Richlite bridge can feel plasticky, which detracts from the overall premium feel. While purists may seek alternatives, the G-45 offers an intriguing modern twist that can yield pleasant surprises for players willing to explore its dynamic capabilities. Overall, it stands out as a solid choice for those looking for a fresh sound in a classic shape.

Gibson G-45 Standard and G-45 Studio review | Guitar World

guitarworld.com

Gibson's G-45 Standard hits the sweet spot for mid-range acoustics, boasting superb build quality and a resonant tone that impresses. With its solid Sitka spruce top and walnut body, it delivers a balanced sound ideal for both strumming and fingerpicking. However, the use of Richlite for the fingerboard may not sit well with traditionalists, sparking debates about authenticity. Despite this, the G-45 Standard stands out as a formidable contender in the market, perfectly blending modern materials with classic Gibson craftsmanship. An excellent choice for aspiring and seasoned players alike, it’s hard to resist this guitar’s allure at its price point.

Disappointing.

I got a Gibson expecting Gibson quality. The fit and finish was not up to standard and looking inside the guitar was where I really realized the craftsmanship was garbage. Glue all over the braces and they were untucked which would be normal on a 300 dollar guitar. You’re really just paying for the name with this guitar. The sound isn’t horrible by any means but for the price there is better.

It's a G-45 Standard. So if you look at it, it's got that classic spruce top and then the back and the sides are I believe walnut. And this is closer to the more entry level price for Gibson acoustics. So anyway, great guitar.
