The Kay K-6000 "Elmore James" Guitar - S. Nathaniel Adams

snathanieladams.com

The Kay K-6000 is a rare find, but its allure may be overstated. While it's a unique blend of two Kay models, the guitar's hefty price tag and unclear production history raise eyebrows. Claims of it being a signature model for Elmore James are misleading; it simply shares his name due to usage. Though its craftsmanship like the solid Sitka spruce top and maple neck showcases some quality, potential buyers should be wary of the model's dubious legacy and the possibility of misrepresentation in the market. In the end, the K-6000 feels more like a collector's piece than a practical instrument.

Elmore James played a Kay K-6000 "Western Rhythm" guitar fitted with two DeArmond pickups, a RHC-B in the soundhole and a Rhythm Chief 1000 just in front of the bridge. The combination of these pickups with the crude X-bracing of the Kay gave him his unique and iconic sound. Before the DeArmond pickups, the guitar had a different electric guitar pickup fitted in the soundhole. The guitar also had a trapeze tailpiece attached to it, and it was used to hold the strings instead of the original bridge.
