Timeless Craftsmanship, Rich Tone

When it comes to acoustic guitars, Martin has been a name synonymous with quality and craftsmanship for generations. We've long admired this iconic brand, and the Martin 000-15M certainly lives up to its legendary reputation.

The moment we unboxed the 000-15M, we knew we had something special. The all-mahogany construction immediately caught our eye with its rich, dark hue and matte finish. The guitar feels incredibly well-built, with no noticeable imperfections or shortcuts in craftsmanship. It’s relatively lightweight and sports a smaller body size, making it comfortable for extended playing sessions.

The 000-15M is a study in simplicity. It lacks any flashy inlays or unnecessary appointments, which we found refreshingly straightforward. The guitar arrived well set up right out of the box.

Playing the 000-15M is a sheer joy, thanks to its smooth, comfortable neck and excellent playability. The craftsmanship extends to every part of the guitar, making it easy to see why Martin guitars are held in such high regard. That said, we did have to make a couple of minor adjustments to the action and truss rod to fit our playing style perfectly, but these tweaks are par for the course with any high-quality instrument.

But let’s talk about the most important aspect—sound quality. The 000-15M delivers a rich, warm, and balanced tone that is both unique and versatile. Whether you're strumming or fingerpicking, the guitar offers clear, articulate notes with superb sustain. While it may not be as loud as some larger Martin dreadnoughts, its clarity and tonal complexity more than make up for the reduced volume. The balanced volume across all strings is particularly noteworthy, making it an excellent choice for recording without much need for EQ adjustments.

The bottom line? The Martin 000-15M is perfect for musicians who appreciate quality craftsmanship and a warm, balanced tone across various playing styles. It's equally at home in a studio setting or a small acoustic set. However, if you’re looking for a louder guitar for large venues, you might need to look elsewhere or make some modifications. Despite its higher price point, we believe the 000-15M is worth every dime for the quality and sound it delivers.

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Martin 000-15M.

Setup and maintenance

  • Owners recommend trying Martin Retro strings or D'Addario Nickel Bronze to enhance tone on the 000-15M, with some preferring heavier gauge (.13 high E) for volume and brightness.

    Source
  • Some users suggest that the nut width on the 000-15M can be limiting for fingerstyle, preferring the 000-17 for its wider spacing.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Users note that the Martin 000-15M's mahogany top offers a mellow tone compared to spruce tops, which are typically brighter and more resonant.

    Source
  • The 000-15M is described as having a "meatier" tone compared to the newer 000-17, which some find essential for certain playing styles, especially fingerstyle.

    Source
  • The 000-15SM offers a 12-fret body with a wider nut, appealing to fingerpickers, unlike the 000-15M's narrower 1-11/16" nut width.

    Source
  • Owners suggest checking out the 000-16 Streetmaster for a similar Martin experience with rosewood back and sides and a torrified adi top.

    Source

User experience

  • Some players reported a thinner sound from new 000-15Ms, which tended to open up and improve in tone after a few months of regular playing.

    Source
  • Owners report that the 000-15M's high E string can get lost in the mix, potentially due to nut cutting issues.

    Source
  • Some owners find the 000-15M's light build enhances its sound and playability, making it a favorite among their guitar collections.

    Source
  • A user noted the 000-15M's resonance is felt physically, making it an emotional choice for singer-songwriters.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The 000-15M is noted for its suitability in fingerstyle playing, offering great projection and clarity when played delicately.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The 000-15M has a longer scale length of 25.4", contrasting with the shorter 24.75" scale of many Gibson models like the Hummingbird.

    Source
  • The 000-15M tends to lose clarity when strummed heavily, leading to a muddier sound compared to the 000-17, which maintains note clarity better.

    Source
  • The 000-15SM’s slotted headstock is aesthetically pleasing but makes string changes more cumbersome compared to the 000-15M.

    Source

Build quality

  • The 000-15M's satin finish is noted for its open grain texture, which is appreciated by some but may differ in newer models.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • There's a significant price difference between the 000-15M and 000-17, with the latter being more expensive, which may influence purchasing decisions.

Just my sound. And the looks!

So I saw some of my biggest idols play this guitar, eg. Chris Martin of Coldplay and Dallas Green of City And Colour, and I've always loved the looks of the dark brown mahogany with the satin finish. But it wasn't until I actually bought the cheaper version by "Sigma Guitars", that I realized, it was just what I needed soundwise as well. I got it in summer 2013 and it hasn't left my side ever since. As a result I've also become a huge Martin Guitars fan in general. My next adventure is gonna be the same one as a dreadnought, the D-15M.

The middle-class musician's acoustic guitar.

Light weight, beautiful, and definitely a Martin. Affordable price relative to great sounding acoustic guitars. Pairs great with an LR Baggs Anthem Acoustic Pickup.

Incredible Little Guitar

I went into my local guitar center time after time, and I found myself picking this guy up every time I went in. Sounds great, and it plays better than any acoustic I've ever played. I'd highly recommend it.

As an all mahogany guitar should sound. Would have been better off against the road with some simple binding.
