The Micro-Frets Saga | Vintage Guitar® magazine

vintageguitar.com

The Micro-Frets Spacetone is an intriguing relic from the past that combines innovative design with some peculiar quirks. Its unique features, like the adjustable Micro-Nut and the Calibrato tailpiece, offer intonation flexibility and stability, which are praised for their ingenuity. However, these same features can be cumbersome and less suited for modern playing styles that involve string bending, leading to tuning inconsistencies. While the guitar's aesthetic and sound have gained a niche following, it remains overshadowed by mainstream brands due to its unconventional build and limited commercial success. The review paints a picture of a guitar that is as much a collector's piece as it is a playable instrument, appealing to those with a taste for vintage oddities.

Carl Perkins used this and his Epiphone Emperor during the early to mid-1970s. One of the most famous uses of the Spacetone guitar was when Derek and The Dominos performed a cover of Perkin's tune "Matchbox" with both Perkins and Johnny Cash on an episode of the Johnny Cash Show in January 1971. Perkins, Cash and Eric Clapton shared the vocals and even a duel solo was performed by both Perkins and Clapton in the performance.
