MXR '75 Vintage Phase 45 Pedal Review - Premier Guitar

premierguitar.com

The MXR '75 Vintage Phase 45 pedal shines for those seeking subtle yet rich phase effects. Its simplicity, with a single Speed knob, and elegant design make it a joy to use, offering warm, organic tones ideal for psychedelic and Stax-flavored music. However, its authenticity comes with some drawbacks: there's no LED indicator for on/off status, and it's battery-powered only, lacking an AC jack. While not as intense as other phasers, it excels in adding lush textures without overwhelming the mix. A perfect pick for players looking to invigorate their sound with nuanced modulation.

Simple pedal, with a very subtle tone

Disclaimer: I have a Dongeomac clone of this pedal

The Phase 45 is a very subtle pedal to my ears. Very much a vintage tone, but luscious just the same! If you're looking for a phaser that won't overwhelm your clean tone but lend all the phaser-y goodness, this is the pedal to get. Single knob pedal makes it super easy to adjust on the fly if you need more of the effect.

The only reason it's four stars is because the more subtle tones may be a turn off for some, and sometimes it feels like there isn't enough phaser for my tastes, but perhaps that's due to my bad habit of diming everything at first. I bet with some fine-tuning, it'll be lush and subtle!

Steve Jones used an MXR Phase 45 on "Anarchy in the UK." In an interview with Ultimate Guitar, he said: "I only used one effect pedal and it was on Anarchy In The UK, it was a MXR Phase 45. That was the only thing I added on my end." He's always been a no-frills, simple rig guitar player, so his primary sound with the Sex Pistols was his white Les Paul through a cranked Fender Twin. Some websites mistakenly state that he used an MXR flanger, but he didn't use one, and the interview here shows he himself said he only used a Phase 45 & it was only on "Anarchy in the UK."
