A warmer and smoother alternative to the block phase 90.
I would grab this pedal over the 74 reissue any day of the week except as a collectible. This is a better alternative to the block phase 90 if you want a more refined, subtle and warm phaser (preferably set before your dirt).
That being said, i’d recommend grabbing a phase 95 over this or the EVH phase 90 which doesn’t do anything more than the phase 95 already does except having a fancy paint job. Plus the 95 will save you some pedalboard real estate.
Preferred Settings + Usage:
Rate anywhere below 12 o’clock. Set before distorion/od.

70's psychedelic sounds.
I bought one for my bass guitar after hearing "Stranglehold" by Ted Nugent as the original recording of the bass had this pedal on it. Sounds just like that original recording with a PJ bass with roundwounds and low action. Outside of that, think Thin Lizzy, early Pink Floyd, or the Police.
Preferred Settings + Usage:
10 O'clock for stranglehold sound.

The original MXR Phase 90 was released in 1974, and it was the first pedal sold by MXR. Roger Waters used it during the 1974-75 and 1977 tours, mainly for Raving and Drooling (an early version of Sheep).
MXR Phase 90 is a stompbox that do the signal modulation - the phase shifting. In general, a phase shifter is a device that alters the sound of a signal by making a delayed copy of the sound and recombining that copy with the original signal. Because the two signals are shifted slightly in time, this leads to a characteristic change in the timbre of the resulting signal.
When Jim Dunlop bought the MXR brand in 1987, production resumed. The Dunlop production models have modern additions including an LED to indicate when the effect is engaged and the option of using a power supply instead of a battery. There are a few variants available, including an Eddie Van Halen signature model. The 1974 Hand Wired Phase 90 is a recreation of an original 1974 pedal using NOS (New Old Stock) electronic components.

The easiest and cheapest way is to keep your MXR M101 Phase 90 and make the R28 mod. It's very simple, just disassemble the pedal and desolder the R28 resistor or simply cut one of the two "legs" (it works for PCB revision E and F).
