Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Pioneer CDJ-850.

User experience

  • Display is outdated; lack of waveform display makes track navigation challenging compared to modern gear.

    Source
  • Using pitch adjustments near BPM turning points (e.g., 127 to 128) can aid in manual beatmatching without decimal displays.

    Source
  • Owners report the cue button may wear out after a year of frequent use, needing replacement or repair.

    Source
  • Pitch fader on the CDJ-850 isn't as precise as modern gear, requiring manual micro-adjustments to manage drifting tracks.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • Loops require manual adjustments and may need loop out point tweaks to maintain synchronization, rather than pitch changes.

    Source
  • Auto Beat Loop buttons can set 1, 2, 4, or 8 beat loops, but synchronization accuracy depends on the rekordbox beat grid.

    Source
  • The CDJ-850's lack of link functionality requires using two USBs, which can be cumbersome for some users.

    Source
  • Lacks hot cues, but Rekordbox-created cues can be called up; absence of quantized loops frustrates some users.

    Source
  • The screen size is small, limiting track information visibility and making navigation challenging.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Ideal for casual settings like backyard gigs, as they provide a more relaxed environment for practice and social interaction.

    Source
  • CDJ-850s are suitable for home practice but not ideal for frequent gigging due to missing essential features.

    Source
  • CDJ-850s are recommended for home use and hobbyists, but not ideal for transitioning to club-standard gear.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • Some users note issues with high bitrate WAV files over 100MB, suggesting 44100Hz files work reliably.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Some users recommend upgrading to CDJ-900s or 900 Nexus for link feature and improved functionality.

    Source
  • CDJ-850s are seen as a significant step below CDJ-2000s, which are closer to club standards.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Buying used CDJ-850s for $500-600 is deemed a good deal for beginners or home practice.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Ensuring jog wheels are smooth and cue buttons are treated gently can extend the lifespan of the unit.

    Source
  • The selector knob may need occasional contact cleaner application to maintain smooth operation.

Pioneer DJ CDJ-850 Media Player Review - Digital DJ Tips

digitaldjtips.com

The Pioneer CDJ-850 is a sturdy, budget-friendly choice for DJs who want a full-size media player without breaking the bank. It boasts the robust build quality typical of Pioneer's lineup, but lacks the modern bells and whistles like a full-color display. While it integrates well with Rekordbox and Serato, and offers standard CDJ features, it doesn't bring much innovation to the table, making it less enticing for those looking to upgrade from older models. Overall, a solid, if unspectacular, option for cost-conscious DJs.

Great deckbut lack of support from pioneer

This is an excellent value for money deck. With its full size platter, recognisable layout and design its the closest deck to the professional club level 900/2000 series as you can get for the bedroom / small club dj level. It makes a transition to te bigger brothers very easy. However, there is an ongoing issue with the auto loop function which Pioneer just seem to ignore. It coud do with a few extra features such as decimal point pitch adjust and quantise support from rekordbox, but Don't let that put you off - for a multi format, professional deck its an excellent starter
