Critic Reviews

Solid State Logic: XLogic G Series Stereo Compressor | Tape Op Magazine | Longform candid interviews with music producers and audio engineers covering mixing, mastering, recording and music production.

tapeop.com

The SSL XLogic G Series Stereo Compressor impresses with its transparent and clean sound, ideal for those seeking subtle compression without altering the original character of the mix. Its Auto Fade feature and flexible settings offer versatility in studio applications. However, its permanently linked stereo configuration may frustrate users needing independent channel control, especially when dealing with dynamic inconsistencies. While it excels at enhancing well-recorded sources, it struggles with problematic tracks, lacking mid-range ratio options. Overall, this high-end compressor suits those prioritizing transparency over coloration.

SSL XLogic G-series Compressor

soundonsound.com

The SSL XLogic G Series Compressor is a masterstroke for mix-buss compression, supercharged with Superanalogue circuitry. It excels in making mixes sound louder and polished, though it demands space due to its warm-running design. With simple controls, intuitive operation, and robust build quality, it offers subtle to peak limiting compression. The Autofade feature, while not essential for all, adds consistency across mixes. Its quality and design make it a standout choice for those seeking a high-quality stereo compressor. However, its need for ample ventilation space is a minor drawback worth noting.

“I also use this on my master buss. The controls never move. The way I have it set up it just tickles it. It's the first bit of analogue gear in my master chain that the signal goes through and the meter hardly moves. Probably half a db or so of movement."

"I use this for drums. I don’t like to put compression on the whole mix. I’d rather work properly on compressing the drums, bass and kick, then go into a good limiter and leave all the extra work to the mastering," Riva Starr says of his SSL G Series Compressor, in this interview.
