Description

The Solid State Logic Fusion is a master processor that brings an innovative approach to the table for today's hybrid studios. This 2U device offers a unique blend of five high-quality analog signal processors that can be used independently or combined to inject vintage warmth, depth, and character into your mixes.

The Vintage Drive provides non-linear harmonic enhancement, saturating signals in a manner reminiscent of vintage gear at its tonal sweet spot. This feature allows you to dial in everything from a subtle thickening to heavy distortion, giving you complete control over the level of saturation.

The Violet EQ is a two-band shelving equalizer that allows for precise tonal shaping, offering selectable frequencies and up to 9dB of cut or boost per band. This carefully tuned EQ allows you to quickly add bass weight or high-end sheen without unwanted side effects.

Key Features:

  • Vintage Drive for harmonic enhancement and saturation
  • Violet EQ for precise tonal shaping with selectable frequencies
  • HF Compressor for controlling high frequencies and reducing harshness
  • Stereo Image for mid-side processing to widen or narrow the stereo field
  • Transformer for subtle saturation and high-frequency phase shift for extra fullness and clarity
  • Highpass filter with three selectable cutoff frequencies
  • Stereo/Mid-side insert sends and returns
  • Peak hold metering
  • Five analog processors can be used discretely or combined
  • Input and output trim pots allow for optimized gain staging
  • Bypass switches for each circuit for easy comparison of sounds
  • Balanced XLR I/O for professional studio integration.

    Source
  • The Fusion is favored for vocal and drum bus applications, with users noting its effectiveness in these areas.

    Source
  • The SSL Fusion is described as a "one trick pony" for mastering, with its primary strength lying in mix bus applications rather than tracking or regular mixing.

    Source

User experience

  • Some owners express reluctance to invest in expensive outboard gear for home studios unless it is for sentimental reasons, suggesting that software emulations might suffice at an amateur level.

    Source
  • Users recommend trialing various plugins like Acustica's Celestial or IK Multimedia's T-Racks to find the best fit for replicating SSL Fusion's effects.

Critic Reviews

Solid State Logic Fusion

soundonsound.com

The Solid State Logic Fusion offers an impressive blend of vintage warmth and modern versatility for mastering and mix-bus processing. Its standout features, like the Vintage Drive and HF compressor, add rich harmonic complexity and a smooth, rounded high-end. With a sleek design and intuitive controls, it’s a tactile joy to use. However, while the functionality is broad, some may find the EQ and stereo image controls lack precise adjustments, particularly in low-end boost. Despite this minor shortcoming, the Fusion excels in enhancing mixes subtly, making it a valuable addition to any audio professional's toolkit. Overall, SSL has created a quality product that, while not without its quirks, delivers exceptional sonic results.

My Year with the Solid State Logic Fusion - Everything Recording

everythingrecording.com

The Solid State Logic Fusion delivers an impressive blend of analog warmth and user-friendly controls, making it a stellar addition to any mixing setup. Its six color circuits transform sound in ways plugins often can't replicate, offering a rich, cohesive mix. However, its price tag of $2495 may deter budget-conscious musicians. While the unit excels at adding character and dimension to audio, it’s essential to remember it's not a substitute for dedicated compression tools. Overall, for those willing to invest, Fusion is a game-changer that enhances the mixing experience.

Solid State Logic Fusion - A Real World Review - Mixonline

mixonline.com

The Solid State Logic Fusion delivers remarkable tonal character and versatility, making it a standout addition to any mix bus. Its robust build and user-friendly interface invite experimentation, and its Vintage Drive section stands out for adding rich, musical saturation. While the Violet EQ and HF Compressor sections offer subtle enhancements, they may not be as impactful for all users. The Stereo Image feature excels in creating space between elements, providing a polished mix. However, the higher price point may raise questions for those accustomed to digital solutions. Overall, SSL Fusion strikes a balance between classic analog warmth and modern functionality, appealing to both hobbyists and professionals.

Solid State Logic: Fusion Master Processor | Tape Op Magazine | Longform candid interviews with music producers and audio engineers covering mixing, mastering, recording and music production.

tapeop.com

The Solid State Logic Fusion is a standout in the realm of analog processors, offering a versatile suite of tools that enhance tone and character for mixing and mastering. With its five distinct processing sections—including effective EQ and a stellar high-frequency compressor—Fusion shines in both subtlety and musicality. However, it requires a learning curve to master the interactions between its components, which may frustrate users seeking immediate results. While the transformer adds a nice touch, it can sound a bit harsh on certain tracks. Overall, Fusion delivers impressive sound shaping capabilities, but the complexity might deter those looking for simplicity in their workflow.

Recording Magazine - Solid State Logic Fusion Review

recordingmag.com

SSL Fusion stands out as a powerful analog bus processor, bringing a fresh take on classic studio tools with its six unique functions. Its intuitive design and impressive tonal shaping capabilities elevate mixes with ease, particularly the addictive Vintage Drive and the new Violet EQ. However, the inability to independently process left and right signals may limit its versatility for some users. Still, for those seeking an analog touch in a digital world, the Fusion is a worthwhile investment that delivers on quality, making it a compelling choice for modern studios.
